Seems like the media are trying make this some kind of global community event where everyone from Albuquerque to Istanbul should be extremely concerned. I would not use the word “epic” in describing this storm but I’m hearing the media use it all too often.

Images I’ve seen of the storm from near-earth orbit make it look like it covers half the planet but it is really much smaller than that.

It was epic.

Way back about 1982 was the last time we had a residual hurricane "eye" pass through the neighborhood. Last night we went through the Southern edge of the "wind wall" twice ~ total silence except for the sirens denoting emergencies for somebody.

When it came to trees falling on power lines, Dominion Power had done a good job and cut down everything that could fall on a wire. Woke up this morning to a mere 178,000 customers (affecting about 1/2 million people) without power in the immediate area.

What I wonder is if the stop lights work, are the grocery stores open, can the doctors get to their offices, are the hospitals safe, etc.

We had 75 MPH "steady gusts" for a good 10 hours yesterday ~ and then 53MPH steady wind until about 3 AM. The silence woke me up ~ a mere 13 MPH wind doesn't make much noise.

I know already that the front of my house was hosed down like a commercial cleaning service had come through here. Even my front door has that new, fresh look ~ and the trees are now without leaves ~ so much for a colorful Fall.

As dawn breaks over Sandy’s wake, a whole new view of this catastrophe will slowly come into focus. Prayers up for our Country.
