(CNN) - Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill's 84-year-old mother, Betty Anne Ward McCaskill, died on Monday, the senator from Missouri said in a statement on Monday.
"For some time, mom's health has not been good, and our family takes comfort that she is now at rest," McCaskill wrote. "People all over the state have asked about her, and their prayers and concern have been greatly appreciated."

It is always difficult to lose a parent, regardless of age. May God comfort the senator and family.
Funny how Dems who are desperate to win an election, seem to always have a dead or dying family member in the mix on the eve of the vote. Remember Obama’s granny?
I agree with your sentiment with one small change.
It is always difficult to lose a parent, regardless of age. May God comfort the senator and family IN HER RETIREMENT.
Losing a parent is difficult no matter how old you are..I lost my Dad in 1998 to cancer so I know how it feels. My condolences to the family
Gracious condolences issued by Todd Akin to McCaskill..http://www.akin.org/updates/akin-statement-passing-betty-anne-mccaskill?fb_ppc_promo
Remember Carnahan’s death when Ashcroft was running; it is sad to lose a parent but this senate race is too important to lose on sympathy votes.

My condolences to the family. That said, here comes the sympathy vote. Will the Senator make a commercial stating that nana wanted more than anything to see her granddaughter win another term?
“Funny how Dems who are desperate to win an election, seem to always have a dead or dying family member in the mix on the eve of the vote. Remember Obamas granny?”
The death rate of family members of Democratic candidates just prior to an election is for beyond coincidence and is likely all part of their plan to gain sympathy and garner more votes.
As a mother, McCaskill may have planted the early seeds for her daughter’s involvement in politics. “At Halloween in 1960, Betty Anne taught her children to say ‘trick or treat and vote for JFK,’ as they went door-to-door asking for candy,” an obituary distributed by Sen. McCaskill’s campaign read.
Claire McCaskill’s mother spoke in favor of Obamacare in 2009.
Remember the undecideds? let’s pray they don’t swing towards Claire now.
Embarrassment?
So get out and vote for Claire because her mother died!
But what about all the unborn babies Akin wants to SAVE and Claire wants to have die?
The deaths they face are neither funny nor something fairly called an evil scheme. We try to be above these kind of attacks on Free Republic, especially in threads announcing the passing of an individual.
I hope she went in peace and Claire, as well her family and friends have warm and fond memories of her.
It's not we conservatives who "unexpectedly" and mysteriously wind up with these situations which pull the heartstrings of voters during critical elections. It's the Democrats, and if you haven't noticed that coincidence, then you haven't been watching all that long.
Speaking of that, I hardly ever recall seeing you around here before, though I note we have very close 'born on' dates. Please don't deign to tell me what "we" do, or do not do, on Free Republic.
God rest her soul.
As Uncle Slayton remarked, "it's beyond coincidence..."
I don't think there's any doubt that such tragedies befall Republican candidates just as frequently as they befall Democrats, but our folks just don't seem to draw these things into elections as often as Democrats do.
A big loss for the immediate family but NOT news.
That it makes the news is a pathetic attempt to generate sympathy for a candidate in trouble. Nothing more.
