Superintendents Paint Dire Picture If California's Prop. 30 Fails ["Bloodbath" Predicted?]

Superintendents Paint Dire Picture If California's Prop. 30 Fails As Gov. Jerry Brown's revenue-raising proposition loses support, school superintendents say class sizes could grow, cherished programs could die and jobs will be lost.

What we face is the biggest challenge in public education since the state of California was founded," said state Supt. of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson

By Stephen Ceasar, Los Angeles Times October 26

As children peered at them through an elementary school fence in Cerritos on Friday, about a dozen school superintendents explained the consequences they will face if California voters fail to approve Proposition 30.

In Whittier Union High School District, class sizes — some already exceeding 40 students — will continue to grow. In Inglewood Unified School District, a $30-million deficit will double and the current school year will immediately be shortened by four weeks. In ABC Unified School District, which serves mostly Artesia and Cerritos, sports, arts and after-school programs — currently unscathed by $30 million in cuts in recent years — will be pared.

"If Prop. 30 fails, we're talking about a bloodbath," said Supt. Dale Marsden of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The district will slash about $10 million from programs for gifted students, music and sports and cut 160 positions.

Proposition 30, backed by Gov. Jerry Brown, would add a quarter-cent to the statewide sales tax for four years and impose a seven-year tax increase on California's highest earners.

Let’s set the record straight. All monies go directly to the general funds. There it is under the control of the state legislators. They get to use it however they want like paying the teachers pensions that are underfunded. Jerry lies, the school system dies.

Let me channel Moonbeam and the California legislators.

For all of you on this thread saying that California wastes money, how dare you. California definitely needs a high speed rail in the middle of no where, so it was much more important to take the tax money you already paid us to use for that. Now we don’t have enough money to build all the extra admin building that the school districts so obviously need. So we must take more of your paycheck. Just suck it up and send us more money.

Do you know if this is one of those propositions that require two-thirds to pass, or does it just require a simple majority? Thanks.

It is almost amusing as you get older to have learned that every single election of your life until the day you die, after voting for 70 years, will include ballot or bond issues to save the schools from collapsing on the children and killing them.

In between elections you will learn about the ever growing wages and pensions and benefits and tenure, and ratio of administration to teachers, and lowering of standards and of illiterate graduates, but the desperate pleas for tax increases to paint the schools and fix the roofs, will still be there in every election.

* As with all state ballot measures, both Prop 30 & 38 measures require a simple majority (50% + 1 vote) for
voter approval. However, under the California Constitution and language in the measures, only
the one with the greatest number of votes will take effect, even if both receive a majority.

Our total California tax load is easily double what it was when I moved here in 1973. Yet everything is much, much worse in the intervening 40 years. Clearly we need to double our taxes again to fix everything up.

You forget: the cure for liberalism's failures is always more liberalism.

It's time to saw California off and let it float around the Horn to Argentina. La Presidenta will think of something to do with it!

all that is needed is to fire 95% of all the administrators, demand disipline in the classroom and they will have more than enough money!

Class size in Asia including private schools is frequently over 40 and they do a pretty good job of turning out educated students.

True. In India class sizes exceed 50 students, they do better and for far less like pennies on the dollar.

Thanks. I thought the propositions that raised taxes required two-thirds.

Well too bad, there are probably enough brain-addled folks in California that they will likely make the 50% hurdle.

Maybe they can cut spending on all the stupid programs that benefit slivers of the population, the gay bath houses & libraries, ethnic community centers etc... of course not they will threaten programs that sound good and people like first.

I thought the propositions that raised taxes required two-thirds

They changed it. They convinced people that in bad times they needed to make it easier to raise taxes.
