Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock is standing by his statement that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended." He says some people have twisted his comment.
Mourdock said in a news conference Wednesday that he abhors any sexual violence and regrets it if his comment during a debate Tuesday night left another impression.
Mourdock, who's been locked in one of the country's most expensive and closely watched Senate races, was asked during the final minutes of the debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.
"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen," Mourdock said.
Mourdock became the second GOP Senate candidate to find himself on the defensive over comments about rape and pregnancy. Missouri Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin said in August that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Since his comment, Akin has repeatedly apologized but has refused to leave his race despite calls to do so by leaders of his own party, from GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on down.

Pathetic. Republicans love to shoot themselves in the head at the exact wrong time. This could cost us big time for NO good reason.
Could GOP male candidates possibly keep such opinions to themselves? Honestly, there is plain stupidity and then there is platinum stupidity. Shut up and talk about the economy and leave all talk of women’s wombs strictly within your immediate families.

Richard Mourdock is not only standing by his comments about rape, but he is standing by the Truth and the Pro Life Cause.
Acknowledging that God is the author of life doesn’t seem a bit controversial to me. Who else creates life? That’s a principle within our Declaration of Independence - that the inalienable rights are endowed by our CREATOR. And that includes rape cases.
The philosophy that we shape our own destinies in every respect is a bunch of hooey. We make our choices, but sometimes things happen in life that we are not in control of. When those things happen we can try to become our own master and damn anybody who stands in our road, or we can say that there may be a guiding Hand who is bringing good out of evil.
The reason these statements would be politically damaging is because Americans are too shallow and selfish to sort them out and realize the deeper truth. It’s that same shallowness that regards a baby - a precious gift of life - as a “punishment” for our daughters to not “be saddled with”.
We are scared sh!tless of the American people. We are afraid that everybody will be sucked in by a bunch of hogwash. I’ve come to believe that this election is really and truly a test of the American people. A day of decision. If the majority of Americans are as stupid and evil as we conservatives fear, then there is no amount of political sweet-talking or manipulation that can save this nation. Period. If we’re that dead already, let’s just get it over with.
When will these idiots learn a concise talking point on this issue?
This will be another 2 weeks of war on woman and the purists who don’t see the politics of this are beyond clueless.
Hence, the current headline: Murdock stands behind statement that rape is a gift from God (when we know that’s not wha he meant).
This isn’t rocket science.
It seems it is tough enough to some people that it ranks right up there with Rocket Science for some of them.
This Senate seat will probably be lost and what should have been a prime year for Republicans picking up Senate seats will likely be lost.
Maybe the Tea Party folks could do a better job vetting some of these people before supporting them and knocking off candidates who could have won.

The GOP needs to grow a pair! I’m sick of this crap. The man was pouring his heart out about the unborn and his faith.
Hell, even Pence told him he should apologize for his comment. I heard this right after going in for early voting. No kidding, within minutes of voting. Had I heard this prior to I think I would have had to hold my nose.
Dear Mr. Pence, stick up for Mr. Mourdock! We don’t need any more panty weights in the GOP. We have plenty of them as it is.
One wonders what this politician would do if his 12 year old daughter became pregnant as a result of a gang rape by a bunch of thugs. Work of God or work of the devil?
It is hard to understand how some of our solid, conservative candidates could be so politically stupid. Akin's comments were just too awful to recover from, Mourdock's are not as bad but still an ridiculous self inflicted wound. All he had to say was "I am against abortion except in cases where the mother's life is at risk" and leave it at that. No need to elaborate on his struggle with the issue or anything else.
There is a time and place for everything. We need nothing which can be twisted against the enemies of The Disaster and need every wavering vote.
It was stupid to get into something like this and pretend to know the mind of God. God wanted the Jews killed? God wanted millions of babies aborted? What man does is NOT always what God wants.
It isn’t hard to understand, we see all over this site and this is about the best site there is.
These clowns are determined to give The Disaster a chance to pull this out. It is just DARING undecided women to vote for the GOP.
Makes no difference. Repubs know the deck is stacked against them, so they need to avoid the pitfalls. This trap was laid out for Mourdock and he bit the bait.
Not that it matters much at this point... control of the Senate looks pretty much out of reach anyway.
Just when we thought we got the abortion debate off the front pages. The battle has moved against the media, not Obama (who has no bullets left in the chamber). It’s admirable to be principled on this issue, but for the next 13 days it only hurts the GOP.

I could see asking him to clarify the statement. But asking him to apologize is another matter all together.

God is the author of life. The devil only has the power to steal, kill, and destroy - which is what the rape is. The creation of life is something different, and only God can ultimately do it.
The death of Jesus Christ was an ugly, unjust, cruel, bad thing. A lot of people did a lot of wrong to get that deed to happen. But in the end that death brought salvation to anyone who is willing to receive it. It satisfied justice for all sin that’s ever been done - including gang rape, abortion, gossip, and a whole bunch of other sins. God has always been in the practice of taking bad, ugly things and making something beautiful out of them instead.
How many women looking at their child whose dad is a jerk still look on that child as the best thing that ever happened to them? Out of a dead, painful stump, God had brought forth a living, beautiful shoot that blessed them in ways they would never have imagined.
They don’t care what he said, they’re to busy wetting their pants.
To a lot of people around here it’s not a baby if rape is involved. Even if they believe it’s a baby you’re supposed to lie about it in order to get elected.
I’m tired of it and they are the ones who are pathetic.
It makes me laugh that these are the same people who complain that the GOP has no balls.
