The assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi last month appears to have been an opportunistic attack rather than a long-planned operation, and intelligence agencies have found no evidence that it was ordered by Al Qaeda, according to U.S. officials and witnesses interviewed in Libya.
The attack was "carried out following a minimum amount of planning," said a U.S. intelligence official, who, like others, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a matter still under investigation. "The attackers exhibited a high degree of disorganization. Some joined the attack in progress, some did not have weapons and others just seemed interested in looting."

I guess that's why there wasn't much property damage, and nobody died.

!!!Pffft!!!

Further, it fits with a broader effort by the Al Qaeda affiliate and the militant group Ansar al-Sharia to establish an Islamic state in eastern Libya. Libyan authorities are identifying Ansar al-Sharia leader Ahmed Abu Khattala as the commander of the attack, though Fox News was told the U.S. intelligence community is not going quite that far. Rather, Khattala is on the short list of suspects and was described as one to watch.

Then there’s the NYT article.

“Although Mr. Abu Khattala said he was not a member of Al Qaeda, he declared he would be proud to be associated with Al Qaedas puritanical zeal for Islamic law. And he said that the United States had its own foreign policy to blame for the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Why is the United States always trying to impose its ideology on everyone else? he asked. Why is it always trying to use force to implement its agendas?”
Al Qaeda or not, does it really matter? The the ones that attacked and murdered our people highly respect al Qaeda. There is no denying that al Qaeda is stronger than ever before. Just go to Washington Post and put AFRICOM in the search field. Even plain old Africa.
For me, I don’t care weather it was terrorists, protesters, or a birthday party, Where the hell were the marines that were supposed to be guarding the embassy? Who redirected our security forces!
Nato helped the Libyan rebels overthrow Kaddafi. Why would the rebels want to attack the US? Either Kaddafi loyalists seeking revenge (highly unlikely in Benghazi) or Al Queda caused this attack. What date did it happen on? Oh yeh, Sept 11-—how convenient and coincidental for a little restless disturbance over a video.
Just a few misguided yutes acting out their aggressions.
The Amish are going to kill us all.
Sure....how do you do it?
You mean, you don’t have mortars in the back of your truck? Hard to believe. I usually have to move the .50 caliber machine gun to fit them.

sarcasm right ?
And here comes the Media to cover Obama’s ass.
The Media needs to be fought at every turn. They are a Fifth Column worthy of a Traitor’s Death.
...is the LATIMES trying to cover this other story?
It was those Amish hooligans.
LA SLimes again using unnamed sources...the folks who went before Congress and swore an oath to tell the truth told a very different story

Topic change - any updates from Jim or John as to the long overdue "fix" to this site? It was promised three quarters ago when the beg went up by a big margin - yet we're seeing nothing here yet but timeouts.
this article..... By Ken Dilanian and Shashank Bengali, Los Angeles Times
Strange how this randomly evolving opportunistic attack led to a fierce, accurate ambush that "appeared professionally executed" where the Libyan officer protecting Americans says, "I really believe that this attack was planned . . . the accuracy with which the mortars hit us was too good for any regular revolutionaries." I guess the accuracy, the apparent professionalism, and the apparent complexity of the attack were just bad luck, which is the only thing that would have kept Obama's international brilliance from bringing us yet another Arab Spring success for American interests.
I for one will sleep better knowing this information. Thanks, LATimes . . . and Obama campaign.
Since I grew up surrounded by 150 million Muslims, I know them like the back of my hand. Al Qaeda is but one of the thousands of radical Islamist groups operating in the world. And that is never going to stop because it is all based on actual verses in their holy book. The only moderate Muslims are those who are not very religious. And indeed they are the majority of Muslims. But when you have over Billion Muslims in the world, all it takes is 1% (=10,000,000+) fanatics to cause bloodshed in so many places.
Sometimes papers recycle old copy to pad out the number of pages they need to publish. Maybe this is recycled from 3 or 4 weeks ago. It certainly doesn’t reflect any of the additional info we’ve received lately.
