The ultimate Big Apple life would have New Yorkers raising kids on Staten Island, doing retail therapy in Manhattan and picking up groceries in Brooklyn.
A poll of Gotham dwellers released yesterday found that 84 percent of New Yorkers said they were satisfied or very satisfied with city life, matching the same 84 percent number from the 2011 and 2010 surveys.
But this New York love story takes a wild turn, based on borough of residence.
For example, 89 percent of Staten Islanders said they strongly agreed or agreed that their neighborhood would be good to raise kids, topping Queens (83 percent), Brooklyn (76), Manhattan (68) and The Bronx (67).
Manhattan respondents, though, were the most happy with shop-till-you-drop options.
Thats because 71 percent said they had excellent or good retail options, outpacing Brooklyn (67), Staten Island (66), The Bronx (57) and Queens (55).
Brooklyn appeared to be the best borough to score groceries, with 75 percent saying they had excellent or good access to markets and grocery stores.
Staten Island (73 percent), The Bronx (70), Manhattan (69) and Queens (68) followed.
Even an esoteric measure like optimism about the citys future varied greatly by borough.
As a whole, 81 percent of New Yorkers said they were optimistic or very optimistic about the future of Gotham, up slightly from 76 percent in last years survey.
Residents of Manhattan had the most optimistic view of life, at 87 percent, followed by Brooklyn (85), Queens (80), The Bronx (75) and Staten Island (69).

Many of them think USA ends at the Hudson River
I have a friend in Brooklyn who comes to visit Chicago every chance he can. (Yes, he considers it an improvement!) He will actually work OT and be comped in the form of time off rather than cash, just so he can come here more often.
Me and my friends joke that he lives here and commutes to NYC on extended business trips.
Oh, I could easily believe that.
I don’t mind visiting NYC for short periods of time. Just don’t ask me to pay for NYC through my taxes. That goes for any city in the US. Their subsidized lifestyle is the only reason the place is reasonable. I have as much desire to go to NYC as watching a good episode of Nova on PBS. While I may watch Nova or occasionally go to NYC, I can easily live without both.
“Hmmm, interesting perspective.”
My feelings exactly .... I’d rather eat freshly dug worms from a manure pit with a dirty fork before I’d live in NYC, Chicago, Detroit, SF, LA .........
Isn’t that special....the rest of the state is dying, business have closed or moved out of state due to high taxes and over regulation.....when I lived in upstate NY I used to think they would put devices on us to monitor our breathing and call it a breath tax......living there for 4 years started me down the path of my conservative journey........raised our sons in IN and now live in TX....both states doing well because of Republican leadership.....not perfect but a lot better than NY
Some people love the NYC and some don’t. I’m not a high density population city lover. [I can’t stand Chicago either for the same reason and I lived there for a month.]
WV is a great place as far as I’m concerned, but I’d go bonkers in NYC [or Chicago]. It’s a personal preference.
One of the things I noticed was the places I considered living were very high cost areas to live. That’s a limiting factor when you’re starting out. Now I’m laid back and comfortable in my small corner of paradise. Life is good and more or less serene.
Same here, left in 1980 and I'm glad I left when I did. It was a sewer back then and from what I hear, it still is.
Some of the nicest people I have ever met are from NYC - when they are thousands of miles away from home. I had to drive through Queens in August, after renting a car at JFK, to pick up a family member who arrived before me, staying at a Howard Johnson’s. We were ultimately destined for Connecticut. I kid you not, every block had a screaming loud sign telling you what you could NOT do, because it violated some local ordinance. EVERY BLOCK ! No wonder they think outlawing a Big Gulp is no big deal. Too bad, I have fond memories of the olden days.
I’ve heard it. I talk up my state for it’s natural abundance, the amazing place that it is. I don’t talk up my city or the greater metropolitan area. All areas have their pluses and minuses. I think it’s kind of silly to talk that up.
