How are negative minutes a possibility? Only positive are possible.

Conservative slanted Fox News...

You really think so? I know many here would disagree with that, myself included.

Good Excellent question!

Depends on how you define it.

What we are really interested in here isn't the absolute number of minutes each candidate gets in debates. That would get very complicated very quickly given differing over all lengths of the debates and times spent asking questions and covering procedural matters.

Easiest to compare and determine biases by tracking percentages of time democrat vs republican.

Set the scale at democrat time-republican time. With a perfectly balanced debate time, the times would be equal: d-r=0.

Democrat bias>0, Republican bias<0.

Now your chart can be symmetric.

We both agree it isn't, we're quibbling about the degree and objective verifiability of the bias.

One can always hope someone, somewhere will think "Hey this guy knows control charts, maybe we can hire him..."

First time is happenstance.

Second time is coincidence.

Third time is enemy action.

Easy answer. The GOP is out of ideas and besides who wants to listen to them anyways. Much better to hear the Democrats that tell us all the stuff we actually want to hear.

Ambassador Bolton was just on FoxNews. He asked Kelly what was the name of the Lincoln/Douglas debate moderator. It was a trick question. There wasn’t one.

He suggested they didn’t need to have one.

They agree what topics to address before the event. They each get time to say what they want. Other parameters could be agree to as well.

Then, 3, 2, 1, debate...

Not a bad idea. Perhaps we should get twenty years of only Conservative moderators first... to even things out.

Add in all the presidential campaigns from 1992 forward and what confidence do you have in a trend?

In no case do three or fewer points trigger an out of control alarm until you get beyond 2σ.

That is true if you assume you are starting with an unbiased coin/event etc. If you know there will likely be a bias in the outcome then its a safe bet you don't need more events.

How is this a surprise? You may remember that Romney got the most face time of any of the Republican candidates during the primary debates.

None of this is by accident. The state media gives their preferred candidates as much extra time and help as they possibly can get away with without too many of the sheep catching on.

LOL! Over all? The bias is unquestionable in my mind since the mid 50’s.

Victory over Joe McCarthy Day is as good a place to start the clock as any other.

Proving it is another matter. The last three debates by themselves certainly isn’t enough to establish the trend.

Extra points for bringing more data to the party.

I’m assuming a process with multiple interacting and sometimes poorly understood inputs.

Nothing so simple as a coin toss, nor quite as complex as real life.

A control chart is better suited to an engineering reality than a mathematical or political construct. Perhaps not the best tool for this particular application, but still useful.

The Republicans need to insist on objective moderators, not these shills for the BO regime.

We can blame the biased moderators all we want, but if we really believe in personal responsibility, then we should blame our own party for appointing members to the Presidential Debate Commission who allow the libs tro control the debates.

Stephen Lekson rule #3

There is no coincidence

What a coincidence!

I was just going to quote Lekson:

"Parsimony has no place here. “Parsimony” is a rule of thumb in logic: in explanations, all things being equal, a simpler logical structure is preferable to a more convoluted logical structure. Parsimony applies to the logic of our interpretation, NOT to the phenomenon we hope to understand."

Actually, I wasn't, but this is as good a place for a little white lie as any...

But since we know the rats got more time all we need to do is map those on an xy and there is your trend.

A control chart is a more powerful version of a simple x-y graph.

It gives you the tools to know when to intervene in the process.

An engineer that panicked every time a process had three data points on the same side of the center spec value will very quickly wear himself out, annoy production and force the process out of control by his constant meddling.
