HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. The room set aside for reporters to watch Tuesday night's debate erupted into applause after President Obama ridiculed the size of Mitt Romney's personal wealth.
Mr. Romney was trying to make the point that both his and Mr. Obama's investment funds probably include investments in China something the president has attacked Mr. Romney for.
"Mr. President, have you looked at your pension?" Mr. Romney said.
"You know, I don't look at my pension. It's not as big as yours, so it it doesn't take as long," Mr. Obama retorted. His reply prompted laughter in the debate hall where the two men were squaring off but across the way in the separate room where the press was stationed, a brief round of applause broke out.

I doubt Mitt’s management of his family’s financial affairs has resulted in the downgrade of his credit score by S&P.
The Pravda Press in it’s natural state.
I would've loved to have heard Romney respond, "Well, when I'm President I'll make sure my policies help you grow that."
1793 French Jacobins and 2012 American Liberals have a lot in common.
Childish punks.
After the election, there’s needs to be a coordinated grassroots effort/protest to take them down. CBS’ Rathergate was a good start but efforts haven’t gone too far since then. Every falshood needs to be addressed, every propaganda piece exposed, run them out of town and out of business. A big task but it will be worth it to reclaim the news media from Pravda.
I was at a friend’s house recently, and he began slamming “rich” people saying they have to pay more taxes, are the root of the problems, etc.
I had to point out to him that once you start playing that game, there is no end to it, and had to point out to him that he had a job, a car, a house and a hot tub on a four season porch, and that he can take two week vacations in Montana and have season tickets to professional football games.
He doesn’t seem to realize that when you play that game, someone will point the finger at you, no matter how modest your means might be, simply because you have a little more than them.
Just amazing.
Gee whiz, for some strange reason when John Kerry was running for pres, personal wealth didn’t matter much to Dems. How could that be? hmmmmm (snicker)
I didn’t know what Romney was talking about. What pension does the President get? He doesn’t get one from being a Community Organizer. He doesn’t get one for his short time in the Senate. He will get once he is out of office for his 4 years as President but other than that I didn’t realize he had a pension he got every month today.
Why would Obama need his own wealth, when he’s always had friends like Penny Pritzker to buy him a mansion in Hawaii? It’s the ultimate in “benefits”, the entitlement mentality taken to its limit.
“You too deserve to have a wealthy white person buy your home and take care of all your needs”.
At least it’s her own money in this case, not “redistribution” from the sweat of middle-class Americans.
I’m surprised that obama did not say, in reference to Gov. Romney’s wealth, “Govenor Romney, you didn’t build that.”
“I didnt know what Romney was talking about. What pension does the President get?”
Obama claims a net worth of between $7 and $11 million. Romney was referring to the “blind” trust where Obama has his millions of dollars of investments parked while in office. The investments are managed by a financial institution. The point Romney was making is that in today’s world, if you have a managed investment account or own mutual funds, you have money invested in China.
With respect to pensions, Obama will draw one from the state of Illinois for his time as state legislator and may receive one for his service as a US Senator. He will also receive a pension for his service as US President ($191,000 per year). Michelle may be eligible for a pension for her executive job at the Chicago hospital.
Given his age it is unlikely Obama is drawing a pension from any government agency today. Most government and private pension plans require the participant to be at least 55 years of age. Payments on his Presidential pension will begin as soon as he leaves office.
No doubt Obama will benefit from lucrative book deals and speaking engagements as soon as he leaves office. The book deals will be worth millions in up front fees and royalties. Bill Clinton made $13 million for speeches in 2011 alone (per Hillary’s financial disclosure statements). He may also accept appointments to corporate boards. No doubt he will also benefit from the best financial investment advisors in the world.
Likely within five years of leaving office, the Obama’s will have a net worth of well over $100 million for very little actual effort on their own. Obama will have ghost writers for his books and his staff (former Presidents have a government paid staff) will continue to write his speeches. Obama will jet around the world in private aircraft, staying at luxury resorts while being paid millions to read speeches from his teleprompter.
If you want to know how the big dogs of the press are doing moneywise—here’s a fact:
Matt “the Schnozz” Lauer lives in the same apt. building on East 64th Street in NYC that Bernie Madoff lived in—they were neighbors.
Yeah, they’re real champions of the little people......
They are not really odds. I was making the statement that the deck is stacked. Geeze read the post. I was saying that the press has it stacked in Obama’s favor and no matter how bad he does, he wins either way. Heck they were in the room rooting for him and the so called moderator was helping him. Probably gave him all the questions beforehand.
“Geese read the post”
I did, and you literally gave odds. You can say now they weren’t “really” odds, but don’t blame me not reading. Blame yourself for not saying it right.
By the way, with or without odds, you are way off. This is by no means a Dewey/Truman race, nor is the deck stacked specially against Romney. Like I said the polls were screwy for awhile, but aside from that it’s like every election. That is, the MSM is for the Dem, big deal.
Hope they’re still applauding when obama steals half of their money.
You have exceeded my knowledge of French history. But my general knowledge of it would tell me it didn’t work out too well for them.
There is a reason that “do not covet” is one of the big ten rules for the roadmap of life. It is destructive of the individual and the society that embraces that error. When you look at the societies that fall to coveting, you see people who are poor and oppressed in communism/fascism/socialism.
I guess your vocabulary does not include the word sarcasm in it. Good bye.
You weren’t being sarcastic. Hyperbolic, yes. Let’s just agree it was a bad post that made a false point.
