Ryan’s Debate Strategy
National Review ^ | 10-15-12 | Bob Costa

Did Paul Ryan prepare for Biden’s bluster?

You bet, his aides say, and they credit Ted Olson, a former United States solicitor general, for coaching the Republican veep candidate.

For weeks, the 72-year-old Olson played Biden during mock debates. During intense 90-minute sessions, Olson mimicked every mannerism of the vice president, from his hand gestures to his sneer.

We’ll have to agree to disagree somewhat. One of the reasons I think Romney was so effective in the first debate is he was able to rebut every single Obama argument with facts - and he wasn’t afraid to make sure he got the last word in, even if it meant using time at the beginning of the next question response. Romney obviously has alot of experience and practice, though.

I do think that Ryan did pretty well and most of the polls show that. I just think he could have been more agressive in making sure he got his message out and that he could have done so in a manner that would not have been off-putting or obnoxious.

Isn’t Olson an Obama supporter?

I agree with you, PAR. Civility be damned. I wanted Ryan to call out that trashy moderator and Biden.
Throw it back in their liberal faces.

Ryan “EXCUSE ME., Martha(may I call you Martha?) and Joe(may I call you Joe?).. Your constant interruptions and disrespctful behavior are doing a disservice to the American people who are watching this debate. They deserve better and so do I.”

One of the reasons I think Romney was so effective in the first debate

Romney was debating a passive Obama.

Ryan wasn't debating a passive Biden. Different strategy required.

Have a great nite.

Ted Olson was married to Barbara Olson, a wonderful Conservative patriot who died on Flight 77 on 9/11.

The solicitor general is a Republican.

I know. My thinking, though, is that as a vice presidential debate, Ryan was there in a very different capacity. I think his mission was to not screw up, look mature and aware of the issues, and maintain emotional cool and virtue.

This goes a long way when dealing with a master of emoting like Biden. Liberals live in emotion. they say “don’t you feel that. . .”, I feel that. . .”. No joke, they feel instead of think.

In that arena, Ryan’s ideas will come across as blah blah blah. And he’ll have his chance, in fact more so if he carries out his mission effectively.

When and if he’s up there at the top of the ticket, then I agree with your point.

Biden was in charge of that debate. He is 27 years his senior and has many more years of smarmy tactics.

Biden was clocked because Ryan beat him in the emotions game. Women fell for the sane, sensitive, virtue guy and dumped the wacky middle age crisis bad comb over (plugs) guy with the adolescent attitude.

Biden’s thinking, hey, it always worked before. . .?

This is an interesting topic - I agree that if your opponent is bombastic and rude, you want to get out of the way and let them make a fool of themselves. But I also think that most people are making a judgment, independent of the behavior of the contestants, as to who is winning the debate “on points”. And I think their overall view of who won the debate is impacted by both style and perceived substance. That is why I think you have to make absolutely sure that you have effectively and agressively made your case. And winning on points does not necessarily mean stating the “truth”. It means “winning” the various different competitive “tussles” within the debate.

Biden's Jack Kennedy remark was so silly that the best strategy was a quixotic look in response...Ryan nailed it. The general opinion of the debate was that Biden looked like an idiot...Ryan's strategy to allow him space to do that was the perfect one IMO

I agree 100%, I said that to my wife as it happened...I also said to her, as the debate was starting, that Biden had to wipe that idiotic grin off his face or he would lose the debate.....he didn't, and he did!!!

Yes, he was married to Barbara Olson. And he used to be a Republican. But hasn’t he spent the last few years bashing Republicans and pursuing a hard left agenda? His 4th wife is an extremely partisan Democrat, who doesn’t even think Republicans are human beings.

There was an article in the New York Times from a couple years ago about how they met and married, then she turned him into a fire-breathing pro-homosexual lawyer. He has been responsible for most of the pro-samesex marriage decisions around the country in the last few years.

Ryan did a good job, but he needed to take a stand against the constant interruptions of the mod and
Biden..he needed to be forceful at times and he let the opportunity slip away. He has some opportunities to call out Biden on some of his statements and he let it pass.

Ryan needs Romney's coach to teach him how to keep his voice in a higher ranger...he speaks in a low tone and the tail end of his statements fade. It's just a matter of some voice coaching, projecting. And he has to be quick, as Romney was quick, to get his point in regardless of the interruptions...Romney's tone of voice was clear and strong, and he was quick with the comments and the put downs of oboma. Bam! Pow! And Ryan needs to learn how to bam and pow, and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.

As Krauthammer said, Ryan was too deferring to Biden..but Ryan will learn as Romney had to learn.

He may have prepared but he wasn’t ready. He should have called out Biden and the moderator during the debate to put a stop to it. “You know Joe, I understand that you are very passionate about your misguided positions, but common courtesy would dictate that you stop rudely interrupting my responses”.

Of course he was under intense pressure and because of his relative lack of experience in such circumstances perhaps didn’t realize that non-partisan, objective observers understood that Biden had crossed the line and that his rebuke would therefore be viewed positively.

Good points. Personally I don't think that Ryan did all that great, especially in allowing Biden AND the moderator what's-her-name, to interrupt him dozens of time. Ryan should have firmly rebuked both Biden & moderator along with some cutting remarks so that the audience as well would understand the rudeness & lack of civility & decorum that these 2 libturds were doing.

In these types of debates you don't win points for being a jackass, but Biden did not care, because he was just to be his regular rude, ass-hole self & backed up by the moderator. Ryan should have blasted both of them.

It looked to me like Ryan was not all that well prepared, and did not have any strategy for firing back at Bite-me or the moderator, knowing full well that they were on a scorched earth approach. I don't think Ted Olson (Mr Gay-advocate) did such a great job either in prepping Ryan, especially knowing that Biden was coming in as his usual ass-hole self. Ryan continually allowed himself to get interrupted by both Biden & moderator. He could have done better.

I recall reading that Biden told a whopper third lie that Ryan should have been prepared for and instantly rebutted Biden... is when Biden said he voted against the war in Iraq & Afghanistan, and in reality, Biden voted for both of these war resolutions, along with most of the demoRATs & the entire top leadership of demoRATs in the Senate & House. Instead he let Biden get away with a another big fat lie.

You may be correct, nick, in that he is now married to a Lefty.
Not a good way to honor his wife’s legacy. Barbara Olson was a conservative power house.
