Consider it a modern take on the legendary tale of Johnny Appleseed. Vancouver, B.C., has announced plans to plant 150,000 fruit and nut trees on city streets, in parks, and on city-owned lands in the next eight years, reports the Vancouver Sun.

At the moment, the city has about 600 fruit and nut trees on city streets, and another 425 can be found in the city's parks, community gardens, and pocket orchards.

"Street trees play an important role in helping Vancouver adapt to climate change, manage stormwater run-off, support biodiversity, and even provide food," Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a statement to the city's council last week.

Yes, all the time. Im guessing that for some reason there arent so many problems up here with the pests you are concerned with?

"Up here" is the operative phrase. My experience includes locations like Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas. And I should've qualified my claim accordingly.

"Down here" we can usually benefit from wild grapes, sand plums and mayhaws -- but little else will produce for human consumption in the wild. A prominent exception is wild pecans, which can actually be harvested commercially in alternate years in some areas.

In any event, the expectation that a city -- "up there" or "down here" -- can plant fruit trees and expect any kind of an edible crop without proper management strikes me as absurd.

I recently saw 5 minutes of some show I think it was called “Taboo”. They had a segment on people who eat out of grocery store dumpsters.

They wash the food in a bleach solution. The sister of one tried some, said it tasted normal but still wouldn’t eat more.

If was starving to death and broke I’d try shoplifting first.

Yeah really.

They should go to McDonalds dumpsters. Practically the same as when you pay for it.

“If was starving to death and broke I’d try shoplifting first.”

I agree, followed by urban foraging. Dumpster diving for food...nope.

Then there’s always “gay for pay”...
