Part of the challenge of becoming the next Chopin for
Sergei Rachmaninov was writing of a set of etudes. Like Chopins, these would be aimed at particular technical problems of pianism. In 1911, at age 38, Sergei reached for immortality.
Rachmaninov: Etude-Tableau in F minor, Op. 33/1
Etude-Tableau in C, Op. 33/2
Magic at 1:54.
Etude-Tableau in C minor, Op. 33/3
Etude-Tableau in D minor, Op. 33/4
Etude-Tableau in E-flat minor, Op. 33/5
Etude-Tableau in E-flat, Op. 33/6
Etude-Tableau in G minor, Op. 33/7
Etude-Tableau in C# minor, Op. 33/8

Must retire an early call awaits me in the morning! No weekends at Castle MacNessa!
The Bugler, his grim visage replete with an evil sneer, already mounts the parapet.
Do poor Tom some charity, whom the foul fiend vexes!
Good night, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America!
Godspeed our Troops around the Globe especially those in harms way by virtue of their service and sacrifice we continue to live in Freedom!

In 1912, at age 39,
Sergei Rachmaninov published a set of 14 songs. This time, I wasnt able to find any with English translations. The last song of this group is one of Sergeis best known, most beloved and most heartbreaking melodies, and no translation is necessary because there are no words. This is a one handkerchief piece.
Rachmaninov: Vocalise, Op. 34/14
