He also needs to make sure he stays on topic, and topic is Obama's failed presidency.
He must make Biden defend it, rather than get sidetracked on extraneous distractions. The Moderator will be on Biden's side, so Ryan needs to out-play the Moderator and keep on topic: the topic is Obama's failed presidency.

Biden is a ruthless bastard, not the amiable dupe the press portrays him as.
I’m nervous about the debate. I think Biden and the moderator have most likely orchestrated an ambush. Biden will be out of control, imo. He’ll repeatedly lie through his teeth while accusing Ryan of doing just that!
