DETROIT -- Heidi Peterson always dreamed of living in a historical home. In May of 2010, she bought one in Detroit's Boston-Edison District for $23,000.
After being away for a year, she said she returned to her house last week and found a woman living there. Peterson learned from neighbors she had been living there for a few months.

I grew up in New Orleans during the same period and think much the same about that city. It seems that both cities have squandered John McDonogh's generous gifts.
Where I live now the biggest threats are black bears and coyotes. We’ve only seen one mountain lion so I don’t count those. When I walk the dogs I have .44 Vaquero on my hip but it’s not because of the neighbors.
Lots of coyotes around here. Black bears are returning to the area but I haven’t seen any. There are unconfirmed reports of mountain lions.
Why should anyone be entitled to more than a fair shair of square footage living space? We have poor people suffering without homes, so it should only be fair to force those with more square footage than the masterminds deem necessary for happiness to take in the unlucky that has no square footage! That would be a much more fair distribution of shelter!
(is a sarc tag really necessary?)
I’m sure that some marxist has already considered this approach.
Owner says she has no agreement with the squatter, who by the way, is also running for President of the United States. Honest.
Squatter says that she is an affordable housing advocate, and that affordable housing is part of her platform for the Presidency.
We had it in Detroit, we called it Urban Removal.
There is a 25 square block section of Detroit just north of I-94 between Mt Elliot and St Cyril that looks like Nagasaki in Sepetmber of 1945.
I saw a Turkey Vulture and pheasant last time I drove through it.
Dr Zhivago is a great movie, anyone who hasn’t seen it should watch it

in this case, anarchy is only one way. If the woman of means hires thugs like you suggest, she will get sued for millions, and may end up in jail. A woman with nothing steals a house, no one cares.
That is why you are careful when hiring your thugs.
Each year, there are arrests of people who go into dive bars and approach people they think look tough, usually to offer them a pittance to kill their spouse. This almost invariably results in petitioner behind bars, as while they may hang out in dive bars, it does not mean that such people are stupid.
To start with, if a city tolerates squatters in the first place, the police not immediately rousting them, then it is a foolish idea to involve the authorities at all.
Second, if you wanted a major work project done at your home, you would hire a contractor, who in turn would hire the labor of subcontractors. You would not expect a contractor to do the work himself. And the same rule applies here.
This provides at least a minimum of “plausible deniability” to you, in that you never meet or even see those who carry out the work. And they never see you, either. Instead you just supply a large amount of cash money to the contractor, and he handles all the details.
When the work is done, you are far away doing other things. There are no written or phone records to connect you with anyone involved. And hopefully you were discreet enough to not make a large cash withdrawal all at once.
As far as the squatters go, they will likely figure out that the people rousting them are unlikely to be sued, and that if whoever hired them was willing to pay them for that, they are likely to be willing to pay them for even more.
It is just less hassle for the squatters to move on.
