LE ROY An Erie County man faces various charges after a routine traffic stop on Route 19 led to the discovery of a homemade grenade and long gun in the trunk of a car Monday morning.
The discovery forced the evacuation of some residents and the closing of several roads in the village.
Paul R. Kaiser, 26, of 12335 Bullis Rd., East Aurora was charged with one count of first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class B felony; one count of unlawful possession of marijuana and various traffic offenses including speeding, driving with a suspended license and uninspected motor vehicle.
Kaiser was remanded to Genesee County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
Village Police Chief Christopher Hayward said Patrolman Steve Fox stopped a car driven by Kaiser traveling north on Route 19, or North Lake Street, for speeding about 6:45 a.m.
The officer thought he smelled marijuana in the car and as he was talking to the driver noticed numerous rounds of ammunition strewn about the vehicle, he said. He asked the driver if he had any weapons and he gave him permission to search the vehicle.
Fox opened the trunk and saw the grenade.
Officer Fox is a former Marine so he knew what he was looking at, Hayward said.

Never give permission to search.
Emphasis on the never. Never give permission and never talk to cops
NEVER talk to the police if you could in any way be considered a suspect. Their job is to find suitable candidates for prosecution. serving and protecting are not in the job description
A grenade? Maybe he was going fishing. :P

NEVER talk to the police if you could in any way be considered a suspect.... You can be a suspect if you even didn’t know you could be a suspect of what you didn’t even know you broke a law for. Shut up. It’s your right.
Some people can handle it, some can not.
