Democratic strategists are eyeing the forthcoming debate between Vice President Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) with a mix of hope and nervousness in the wake of President Obamas widely panned performance in his initial encounter with Mitt Romney Wednesday night.
On the plus side, some Democrats feel that a strong performance from Biden next Thursday could turn the page on the presidents near-debacle in Denver.
But they also worry that Bidens legendary capacity to state his views in an inartful fashion could backfire. More prosaically, there is the possibility that the vice-presidential clash will be an insignificant sideshow, which would mean that Obama might have to wait until the second presidential debate on Oct. 16 before righting his ship.
Across the Democratic ranks, the reverberations from the presidents poor showing were clearly still being felt Thursday.
Republican consultant Dan Judy said of the Biden-Ryan clash, it will be entertaining but I dont think it is likely to change voters minds.
For Judy, unlike the Democratic strategists, that would suit him just fine:
The president isnt going to really have a chance to get his footing back until that second debate with Gov. Romney. He has never really found himself in that position in any campaign he has run, Judy said. It is going to be fascinating to see if he has the resilience to deal with it.

Desperation to the max.
I am sure Bidenw will pull some sort of stunt on Ryan..hope Ryan is expecting it.
I think someone’s confusing insanity for desperation.
And the Japanese thought the kamikazes would blunt the US Navy's momentum, post-Saipan.
“Dems hope Biden can blunt Romney momentum post-debate”
Damn, they’re in worse shape than I thought if they’re counting on that moron for help.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer barrel of snakes.
Old Joe won't even know what hit him after the first 2 minutes. They will need a wet vac to clean up after that one.
Bet your bottom dollar that the Democrats are mourning the fact that they did not replace Biden on the ticket months ago. Dan Quayle is Albert Einstein in comparison to this moron.
Don’t kid yourself. Biden is a very good speaker and CAN beat out Romney. Be cautious. Remember, it’s the media’s game.
Wisconsin ping: Dems look to the Biden/Ryan debate to “right” Obama’s campaign ship!
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
LOLOLOL! Obviously these “Dems” don’t know Paul Ryan! He will take no prisoners when he squares off with ol’ Joe.
Whoops....Biden can beat out Ryan...and/or Romney.
Any organization depending on Joe Biden for much more than bringing the bratwurst and beer is an organization in trouble.
I should add that Ryan will slaughter Joe with grace, with facts, and with a smile on his face.
Is this the Friday Silliness Thread?
Never put hope and Biden together and expect nothing but fail.
Biden? Keep on the pressure.
We gotta stay humble and focused...
Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Biden is an idiot, but cannot be underestimated. He will be baiting Ryan big time. Ryan needs to be SHARP.
Ryan needs to assume there's a high probability that Biden will know what the quetions are beforehand, and that they will be calculated to put him on the defensive. There is more than enough evidence of collusion between the journalists and the Obama campaign to warrant suspicion this will be a setup.
