Oregon authorities are investigating how a farmer was eaten by his hogs.

Terry Vance Garner, 69, never returned after he set out to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm near the Oregon coast, the Coos County district attorney said Monday.

A family member found Garner's dentures and pieces of his body in the hog enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed, District Attorney Paul Frasier said. Several of the hogs weighed 700 pounds or more.

While not as aggressive or nasty as feral hogs, any 400-700lb hogs can be very dangerous if PO'd. And since they're *omnivorous*, it's a nasty way to go if they decide to knock you down and eat you alive. At 500-700lbs, they're pretty intimidating and I'd want my Beowulf .50cal w/ 400gr HPs to deal with them.

Assuming they were being properly...and regularly...fed why would they bother with him? Perhaps he had a fatal heart attack or something while in the pen and they figured...”hey,let's try *this* out.Pretty tasty,actually”.

At a small farm near where I grew up in SE Missouri an old farmer had a heart attack fell over and was partially consumed by his hogs. So I know it happens.

Incidentally, what the hell kind of people name their county “Coos”? Do you have to enter it through a tunnel, or something?

Their main purpose in life is to EAT, crap and reproduce. As a Farmer (never raised hogs, but neighbors have and do) I have respect (and fear of) for massive animals which eat anything, regardless. Either he dropped over or they took him down. Possibly, the boar went after him. The sows are very protective of piglets, but not as aggressive as the males. If they’re in heat, they both get nasty. Best to feed from outside the enclosure, IMO, at that weight.

They are always about 10 minutes from “feral”.
Never trust them.

They need to “graduate” as soon as they’re up to weight.

Happened to a few old farmers where I grew up. Died in the pen, and were eaten by the hogs.

As a city boy (well,suburban actually) I know nothing about hogs but anything I’ve ever seen on film seems to suggest that they’re pretty docile while being fed.Looks like I might be wrong.But if he was an experienced hog raiser why would he put himself in that kind of danger by entering the pen?

Some are right on the edge of feral, always. That’s why, if I ever visit a neighboring farm, I don’t go near them, except with my 1911 .45 and Beowulf .50, at-the-ready.

Didn't any of you watch Deadwood? That was the preferred method of disposal for pretty much any one who was killed on the show. Perhaps there should be some similar setup in DC? I am sure we could find some way to distribute the fattened hogs to all the undernourished newly added to the food stamp rolls.
