According to the Federal Communications Communication, a program that gives free or subsidized phones to low-income people has doubled in the state of Ohio over the past year, to cover more than 1 million people.
The Dayton Daily News reports that the program cost the state of Ohio almost $27 million just in the first quarter of 2012. That was a more than $11 million increase from the same period the previous year.
Taxpayers are covering this program two ways: direct cash expenditures, and a raise in phone rates via the Universal Service Fund charge on phone bills.
No wonder so many voters in Ohio are supporting Obama. They are getting Obama phones.

Smart phones, dumb voters.

They aren’t free, the rest of us pay for them.
Oh and the telecom companies aren’t doing it to be nice, theres a law that says they have to.
At $200/phone plus another $80.00 (Assuming a minimum plan ), that would be about $300 per person.
That’s another $300 Million down the drain.
Fools. The people of Ohio are fools and tools.
All F’ed by the fickle finger of fate and diddled by the dangling dong of destiny.
How much you wanna bet that all those numbers are mysteriously available to the Obama campaign for election dat get-out-the-vote efforts?
How much you wanna bet that all those numbers are mysteriously available to the Obama campaign for election day get-out-the-vote efforts?
Hey, now be careful. I used HEAP a few years ago when I ran into some financial problems, and got my free Obama phone and free minutes. I rarely used it and it is a piece of crap!
TANSTAAFL........
Do you think it would be possible to find one - just one - of those one million free Obama phone users that would cast a vote for Romney?
May God help us all. Do what you can from now until November 6th. .
Not unless they run out of minutes. I BELIEVE a lot could be people that lost their jobs as a result of Obamas failed policies. I wouldn’t be surprised if Romney gets 35% of those voters.
The phone is a basic TracPhone or equivalent. $10.00 at Walmart when I got one. 250 minutes - maybe about
$20.00 if purchased individually, but should be heavilly discounted for bulk....one figure I read was $10 per month per person.
Companies like this because they can sell fancier phones and additional minutes to recipients on the program for cash.
A friend of mine has one. He is a disabled veteran. Lives in a residence facility for the homeless here in Greensboro, North Caroline. Republican all the way.
You want to take it away from him?
Am I to gather that 12.5 million Obamaphones, paid for by taxpayers, is an acceptable use of taxpayer funds? Come on!
Until just a few years ago, I did not want a cell phone, I held out forever because I did not want the expense.
Guess I was going to bear that expense whether I was willing or not. This country is teetering!
“You want to take it away from him?”
No, but many of us have donated phones to vets, or contributed to funds for that purpose voluntarily.
Please do not conflate public disgust at moochers with military benefits gladly paid.
