Mitt Romney made a bold prediction Friday during his first public campaign stop in months in a state where polls show him lagging and that GOP insiders say he has all but given up.
"We're going to take Pennsylvania," he promised an animated crowd at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne.
His assessment earlier in the day at a Union League fund-raiser in Philadelphia was sober, yet optimistic.
"We really would shock people if early in the evening on Nov. 6, it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way," he told donors before adding that he was confident he could do it.
Whether those remarks amounted to mere campaign bluster or signaled a late reassessment of the Republican presidential candidate's chances in the Keystone State remained anyone's guess.
"I wish I could say," said one state GOP leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "But coming back to Pennsylvania is certainly a good step."
Recent polls have almost consistently shown President Obama pulling ahead by seven to 12 points in the battle for Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes.
And last month, a pair of Romney-affiliated super PACs suspended all advertising in the state, opting to focus their resources in places the former Massachusetts governor appeared more competitive.
But Pennsylvania GOP leaders have sought for weeks to convince the national campaign that it's too early to give up.
As well-heeled donors at the Union League munched Friday morning on fruit parfaits in stem glasses, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) reminded the crowd of another come-from-behind victory

I am just looking at Pennsylvania since that is where I grew up.
Pennsylvania voted for Reagan twice. Voted for Bush once (did not vote to reelect). Voted against Dole, George W. McCain and MAYBE Romney. It appears that Pennsylvania wants a President like Reagan and the Bush Father they at first elected before he raised taxes after saying he wouldn’t. Every election since, they did not vote for the “liberal Republican” or “Compassionate Conservative” types. They want the true blue conservatives and no fake ones.
Romney wins Pa and the election is over! :)
Romney won’t win PA, but he might just generate enough enthusiasm to win a senate seat for the GOP. That may be his strategy in campaigning in PA.
BTW, Mr. Romney, PLEASE KNOCK OFF THE CONCILIATORY BULL SH*T! Obama is not a nice guy, he's a destroyer of our nation. F*ck the few that get their feelings hurt when you speak the truth about this POS.
Why politicians think we want to hear them say nice little warm fuzzies about the other side is beyond me.
He HAS to be. I live in a first ring Philadelphia suburb in Montgomery county PA. In recent years the limosine liberals have infiltrated our township. The last few elections has shown a pretty even split of Dem/Rep bumper stickers and yard signs. This time around initially the anti-Obama signs had a huge lead over the Obama/Romney signs. But in the last few days, Romney signs have taken over. I can only think of one car that has an Obama sticker - there are NO Obama yard signs. Even my Liberal Jewish neighbor is voting Romney - has never voted for a Republican for president ever.
I think PA will surprise a whole lot of people...ESPECIALLY obama and his sycophants.
And VA....
Again, I think, with these Econ numbers, etc., the best indication is the last election anywhere...
And PA went Pat Twomey (sp)...
Just sayin’
No large crowds for Obama, compared to 2008, almost zero bumper stickers for Obama across the entire country, compared to 2008!!! Folks, that is the “real” polls!!! Romney/Ryan will win Pennsylvania and will win the POTUS race in a landslide victory. We just need to get all of our troops to the polls across the entire nation, and “ Hate America” Obama & the “Traitor” Democrat party will be defeated beyond expectations!!! A repeat of 2010, only of greater magnitude!!!
Just completely ignore the mainstream media. They all speak with forked tongue!!!
Wow...
Bah humbug:(. Hey are you diogenes?
According to this map most of PA is red. The New Jersey boarder is the killer.
The Jersey border is where the majority of people live. The problem with Coal has been replaced by the great fracking which in Western Pennsylvania and some places in central Pennsylvania has become very profitable. I don’t know if they will turn out to be a wash.

The area I am speaking about is very Jewish as well.
RE: Pennsylvania voted for Reagan twice. Voted for Bush once (did not vote to reelect). Voted against Dole, George W. McCain and MAYBE Romney.
Maybe this is an indication that the population makeup has changed?
I mean, New Hampshire used to be the “Live Free or Die” State, but it has now been populated by many liberals in Massachusetts.
“I’d like to see some absentee evidence from PA.”
OK, here’s some: my wife and I have applied for our PA absentee ballots and we are definitely voting for Romney/Ryan and religious freedom.
BTW, damn few Obama signs or bumper stickers around.
With Obama’s War on Coal, and Anti fracking stance, Yes PA is in Play.
They need the Supreme Court to strike down the early voting IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
