Mitt Romney made a bold prediction Friday during his first public campaign stop in months in a state where polls show him lagging and that GOP insiders say he has all but given up.
"We're going to take Pennsylvania," he promised an animated crowd at Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne.
His assessment earlier in the day at a Union League fund-raiser in Philadelphia was sober, yet optimistic.
"We really would shock people if early in the evening on Nov. 6, it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way," he told donors before adding that he was confident he could do it.
Whether those remarks amounted to mere campaign bluster or signaled a late reassessment of the Republican presidential candidate's chances in the Keystone State remained anyone's guess.
"I wish I could say," said one state GOP leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "But coming back to Pennsylvania is certainly a good step."
Recent polls have almost consistently shown President Obama pulling ahead by seven to 12 points in the battle for Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes.
And last month, a pair of Romney-affiliated super PACs suspended all advertising in the state, opting to focus their resources in places the former Massachusetts governor appeared more competitive.
But Pennsylvania GOP leaders have sought for weeks to convince the national campaign that it's too early to give up.
As well-heeled donors at the Union League munched Friday morning on fruit parfaits in stem glasses, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) reminded the crowd of another come-from-behind victory

ROMNEY: ‘WE ARE GOING TO WIN PENNSYLVANIA’

I like his optimism. Hope he can pull it off!
The key is seeing if Obama thinks so. Will he be making more ad buys or more trips to the state? We shall see.
This probably has something to do with that internal poll recently that had Romney within 2% in PA. His campaign is apparently getting some feedback that PA is in play, and they’d better act. Expect to see some big ad buys in the Philly market (which will cover Bucks, Delaware, and the other purplish suburban counties) about three weeks before Election Day.
; )
I do think he can take it though.
Campaign events this weekend in Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, new Hampshire and Colorado. Sounds like our team is playing on the blue end of the field. Actions speak louder than media polls.
I remember last time when palin we heading to events in North Carolina and Indiana in the last month. At the time I could not fathom we would lose either stronghold. Again, the polling shows them where they should spend their time and resources. Right. Is we are investing limited time in blue leaning states. That tells me where things are.
They need a judge to strike down the voter ID law in order to get the same numbers they had in ‘08
I live in an area with a number of Jewish democrats. NO Obama signs or bumper stickers.
Wishing hasn’t made it so recently but I wish you the best with that thought.
Keep hammering the coal issue in PA and OH.
Romney should stay in Virginia, Florida and Ohio ONLY!!! He needs to go to states he has a better chance in. Why he is trying for Pennsylvania is beyond me. He does not need Pennsylvania. He needs those 3 that I mentioned.
PA has a healthy Catholic population. Romney/Ryan need to appeal to the Commonwealth’s founding as one rooted in religious freedom and tie Obamacare’s contraception mandate to the kind of religious oppression William Penn fled.
PA Ping!
If you want on/off the PA Ping List, please freepmail me. Thanks!
Such crap. If George W didn’t win Pennsylvania either time, there is no way a socialist like Romney is going to win.
Let’s not forget who Romney is running AGAINST. Unlike Al Gore and John Kerry, Obama has a RECORD as President and it ain’t purty.
As our OH absentee tracking is showing, Obama is miles behind his 08 pace, even in the big cities (and no, Cleveland and Cincy do not = Philly). So I'd like to see some absentee evidence from PA.
Actually, it seems like you have that backwards. BECAUSE Romney is so socialist, he might actually have a chance in Pennsylvania.
There is no way Obama gets the same number of votes. He is an open joke in Pittsburgh. Very few signs or bumper stickers.
