Updated at 3:49 a.m. ET: CAIRO An ultra-conservative Islamist cleric in Egypt faces charges of blasphemy after he allegedly tore up and burned copies of the New Testament at a protest in front of the American Embassy in Cairo.
Ahmed Mohammed Mahmoud Abdallah, also known as Sheikh Abu Islam, is part owner of a private ultra-conservative Islamic TV station known as Al Uma and was participating in demonstrations against a U.S.-made movie denigrating the Prophet Muhammad that swept the Muslim world in the last month.
Egypts General Prosecutor accused Abu Islam and his son, the channel's executive director, of insulting religion in this case Christianity.
The case is a rare example of the countrys often-criticized blasphemy laws being used against someone who allegedly insulted a religion that is not Islam. That trial is scheduled to begin September 30.

Attention seeking.
Our God is not a book. Burn all you want and let God be the judge.
Free speech requires us to have thick skins. Any religion that can’t handle dissent or debate is a hate cult.
Oh snap.
Now I’m going to riot and find out where the Egyptian Embassy is in this town so that I can attack it with mortars and RPGs.
Or I can go on to the next thread after saying “What a jerk”.
forgive him Lord, he knows not what he is doing
Angry Christians around the world swarm into the streets, destroying all in their path in 3, 2, 1...
If they hadn't protested this film, it would have been viewed by maybe a hundred people. World wide.
Now that they have made it an issue, it has been played umpteen million times. World wide.
If this movie is insulting to your prophet, and your prophet is so dang sensitive to insults, then why, why, why did you cause him to be insulted umpteen million MORE TIMES ?
Matt 5:18 “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.”
You wanna go riot, or you wanna go bowling? I'm thinking I'll skip this riot.
The Son of God is the Word of God.
Except for perhaps Universalism, every religion blasphemes the others.
For example, a Christian or Jew would not say or recognize the “Prophet” Mohammed - blasphemy to Islam.
A muslim would not say Christ is Lord - blasphemy to Christianity.
You can’t have freedom of religion and anti-blasphemy laws at the same time.
Yes, and that’s exactly why we don’t have to be worried by what they do to a book or even a symbol. It’s a sign of disrespect, certainly, but Jesus was well aware of what kind of treatment he and his followers would receive in the world, and he never ordered us to go out and kill others over it.
On the other hand, the Muslims know, deep down inside, that their “prophet” and their “god” are both false, and that’s why they feel that it is necessary to use violence to defend their fragility; nothing based on lies is ever strong.
Waiting for a spontaneous protest of RPG carrying Christians at the Egyptian embassy in 3.2.1.....(sarc)
The Son of God is the Son of God.
And he's already won the battle this cleric is attempting to wage, the poor fool.
“Burn all you want and let God be the judge.”
Indeed. I think God would probably rather have this loon burning Bibles than hurting people, because it seems like he is intent on destroying something one way or another.
They’re using the word ‘conservative’ with them to try to equate us with crazy people like them.
Don’t fall for it.
Remember “words mean things?” They’re all about guilt by association.
