Mitt Romney has muddied his message on the GOP's signature issue of taxes at a time of growing frustration in the party about the direction of his campaign.
Now struggling in the polls, the Republican nominee said this week that President Obama had not raised taxes and downplayed the tax relief in his own proposal...
"It's not a particularly compelling message to tell people you're not going to see much of a tax cut in the way most people think of tax cuts," said Jim Pethokoukis of the American Enterprise Institute...
Larry Kudlow, a prominent supply-side commentatot said he was flabbergasted by Romney's remark that voters shouldn't expect huge tax cuts in his administration.

Don’t ignore the American Enterprise Institute - or Kudlow for that matter.
Please stop posting this crap from the Hill. The Hill is lib propaganda.
Who says that I post from them all the time? I don’t.
Secondly, please don’t turn this thread into a discusiion about me - that is a diversionary tactic on your part.
Third, please stop with the diversions about making this about “The Hill”
Please attack the message, not the messengers.
And its funny how I see liberals always calling The Hill a conservative website.
No, that WAS his message.
The last couple days he’s been backfilling with some “reassurance” that while marginal tax rates on the top earners will go down, the taxes they pay will stay the same or go up because deductions will be eliminated.
He now says he’s focused on reducing ‘middle-class’ taxes.
I follow both Jim and Larry on twitter, yes, they have had differences with Romney with style, but never on substances.
Romney followed that up on Wednesday by warning voters to keep their expectations in check about his promise to cut income tax rates by 20 percent, noting that deductions and credits will have to be eliminated to make that possible.
By the way, dont be expecting a huge cut in taxes, because Im also going to lower deductions and exemptions, Romney said. But by bringing rates down, well be able to let small businesses keep more of their money, so they can hire more people.
The media is twisting and distorting every single thing Romney says and then knuckleheads on the right respond to the twisted messages rather than the actual messages.
Ignoring The Hill, especially if the story is true, won’t change the fact that Romney is a liberal Republican who likes mandates and government revenue (taxes). Why is anyone surprised at this?
The SRM are begging to be RICO collars. We need to treat their Washington cocktail snootfests where they agree on the latest bad news for Romney the way we treat Mafia social clubs with bugs and photos of everyone attending.
Don't know if Mitt said "this" but it is false. Obama lied in his "no new taxes" pledge on the Middle Class.
Obama and his corrupt democrats must be removed from power, or nothing else is going to matter.
Romney can be dealt with later, but first Obama must be stopped from being allowed to destroy this country.
Sometimes I think one of Romney’s key advisors is a Dem double agent.
The ‘struggles’,’disarray, ‘lack of focus’ ‘gaffes’ in the Romney campaign is primarily a manufacture of the media. The media sets the narrative and many of the pundits on the right get sucked into it. The complaints about Mitt from the right are then used by the left to further underscore the ‘problems’ with the Romney campaign.
because Im also going to lower deductions and exemptions.
Only a matter of time before that housing interest deduction goes by the wayside. If he does this to the rich it is going to happen to everyone eventually.
Republicans have lately shown a talent for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Romney is showing the same talent.
Do you understand that those arguing for a flat tax are also essentially calling for the same thing? Lower rates combined with eliminating some deductions, so the effect is revenue neutral.
Funny I am for a flat tax, but lets just jump in instead of going around the block about it.
