Russia has suspended the import and use of an American GM corn following a study suggesting a link to breast cancer and organ damage.
Separately, the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA), has ordered its own review in to the research, which was conducted at a French university. The decision by Russia could be followed by other nations in what would be a severe blow to the take-up of the controversial technology.
Historically, biotech companies have proved the safety of GM crops based on trials involving feeding rats for a period of 90 days. However, experts at the University of Caen conducted an experiment running for the full lives of rats -two years.
The findings, which were peer reviewed by independent experts before being published in a respected scientific journal, found raised levels of breast cancer, liver and kidney damage.

Yes everything cause cancer we know.
I wonder if we have less cancer now that fewer Americans are smoking?
Remember the silicone breast implants cause cancer scam? When such claims are made, always ask who is making money off the claim.
As for the rest of the world, let ‘em eat each other. Our grain keeps many from starving.
If the Commies like Russia and China don’t want to buy our grain, and try to play with the debt crisis, we should remind them that only weak nations HAVE to pay up on demand.
I had no idea General Motors was growing corn.
Yep. Remember what happened to Saccharin? Alar? How coffee has been declared alternately unhealthy and healthy? Wine? AGW?
BTW, My gut tells me that these countries are using this useless study as leverage in negotiations over prices.
Fine, let the world starve some more. Really, is that what they are saying? Oh well, more for ethanol. LOL
Good! Maybe that will drive the price of corn down which will keep livestock producers in business. Maybe it will bring the price of that engine destroying ethanol down that will bring the price of gas down. Maybe shipping fees can be reduced thus making it easier for small retailers to make a profit.
companies have proved the safety of GM crops based on trials involving feeding rats for a period of *90 days*,
Pure science NOT.
I question most of these studies. Worked with a bunch of old WWII veterans who smoked heavily until their dying day, none of cancer and all of advanced age (80’s). As one (MD) put it, we all have cells that may or may not be programed for cancer. If you've got them, something will eventually trigger them. Hence the hereditary factor of illnesses. I'm sure there are other cause/effect scenarios but feel the majority fall within hereditary predisposition. Stating that genetic engineering of foods, especially without the addition of known cancer causing agents, causes cancer is pretty hard for me to accept without a substantial number of independent and long term studies. End result for some of the world may be to eat and have a minor risk of getting cancer or starve and certainly die. World population is close to exceeding the ability of land available to grow crops as we know them. Options are to increase crop yields or reduce the population.
Posted this at the DM online, but I’ve never seen one of my non-leftie comments see the light of day on that website.
Folks should keep in mind that, even if this study proves to be true, removing GM products poses a real clear and present danger.
Global grain/cereal production would be reduced by more than half. As a result, millions of people in the third world would die of hunger and hunger-related ailments. 10s or 100s of millions more would go to bed hungry and not get enough to eat.
We’d also have to start spraying our crops with more dangerous herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, etc, because GM crops were made to be resistant to weeds, pests, fungi, etc. Runoff of these chemicals into streams and drinking water would do far more damage to humans and animals where the food is grown.
You can wring your hands about what might happen if you eat GM foods. However, we KNOW for a fact what would happen in this world without them. Unfortunately, most people making the decisions about this stuff live in the West, where we can handle a 400% increase in food prices. The world’s poor can’t.

At least in the European Union , Genetically Modified foods have to be labeled as such.
Not so in this country.
The key question is : “ How much to you trust Monsanto ?”
I recall that the German engineers who created margarine (then made from Coal tar ?) refused to eat the stuff .
Personally , given the exclusivity of the Monsanto brand on herbicide / insecticide resistant crops suggests to me that the god almighty profit exceeds the need for “safe food” .
Monsanto now owns the seed , the insecticide , and the herbicide in “no-till farming” . I question their priorities.
Better to use the Geneticaly Modified crops for ethanol production .
This is not the first study to indicate possible long-term effects of G M foods ; its just the first long-term test that went out over 2 years , and can be verified.
Increased cancer rates, still-births , under-weight births, and sterility of off-spring were noted even in the previous short term studies.
Personally , I want GM foods and additives to be labeled.
I value health and safety over profit !
I almost hate to ask, but where did you come up with the idea that Monsanto has a monopoly on herbicides and insecticides used in no-till farming?

I don’t want to be the one who asks the worlds poor whether they want to die this year from malnutrition , or die in 5 years from cancer
Agenda 21 calls for control of food production and population control .
Monsanto owns the patent for the seed , the herbicide , and the insecticide . Monsanto has a vested financial interest in the sale and distribution of these products.
Given the results of this long-term test , it can best be accomplished through the use of G M Foods !
Fine, the Russians prefer possible starvation this year to possible cancer decades from now. We all have choices to make and will eventually die from something.
It would be easier to paint Monsanto as a boogyman if it weren’t for the fact that its patent on Round-up expired several years ago and if it weren’t for Bayer, Dow and Dupont, all of who compete in the agricultural chemical market and all of who are several times larger than Monsanto.
Mr. Lucky~ “ It would be easier to paint Monsanto as a boogyman if it werent for the fact that its patent on Round-up expired several years ago “
Right !.. but Monsanto owns certain patent rights to Geneticly Modified crops .
I am unfamiliar whether or not Bayer , Dow , or Dupont are involved in G M foods , which is on what the long-term testing is being done .
Lots of companies hold lots of plant patents. I would guess that there are well over 100 active patents on corn alone.

Right ~ there are a lot of “intellectual property” seeds , or proprietary seed market , or what we commonly call: Geneticly Modified (G.M.)seed crops.
The largest GM / intellectual property seed sales are :
#1 Monsanto(US) at 23 % ,
#2 DuPont(US) at 15% ,
#3 Syngenta(Swiss) at 9%,
#7 Bayer Crop (Ger.)at 2%. , etc.
The proprietary seed market accounts for approximately 82 % of the commercial seed market worldwide .
According to these statistics , the US portion of proprietary seed is approximately or over 38% .
