HOBYO, Somalia (AP) The empty whiskey bottles and overturned, sand-filled skiffs littering this once-bustling shoreline are signs the heyday of Somali piracy may be over. Most of the prostitutes are gone and the luxury cars repossessed. Pirates while away their hours playing cards or catching lobsters.

Arming the ships worked. So much for anti gun nuts!
Russians were executing prisoners. Stupid Americans sent them to the US for trial.
The article mentions an EU navy attack that destroyed weapons, equipment and fuel in May of 2012. This is the first I heard of it. Anyone else hear of it?
I feel as though I am living in the old Soviet Union, where people learned of events months or years later.
Ya think the AP would have a clue...
This was pretty well reported in the international and defense media. Since the US had no involvement it got no coverage in the US MSM. I think perhaps it's so odd that the Europeans would do something militarily that the US doesn't lead that the media didn't even recognize it.
It goes against the pacifist, PC fantasy world that a lot of the MSM lives in, but the way to stop pirates is to kill them. When they attack a ship, shoot them. When you catch them, do what the Russians did — set them adrift in the middle of the ocean to die of thirst and hunger. We don’t need any treaty to do that.
You destroy it.
What the 'pirates' are doing now is, completely cannibalizing their high priced cars for parts, after their pirating cash cow was put to an end.
Only in the age of wimps could a few guys in a skiff armed with AK47s dream of taking over a cargo ship. Its amazing the phenomenon lasted as long as it did since the answer to the problem was so obvious (to conservatives).
Somalia is a resource rich country estimated to have Africa's second largest reserves of oil and natural gas, as well as a wealth of precious minerals. It has the longest coastline of any African nation and is blessed with magnificent beaches and crystalline blue waters. If Somalia were to obtain a reliable degree of safety and security, they'd make a killing on tourism alone...
As it stands, Somalia is a case study in what happens when lands blessed with tremendous resources fall under the shadow of tyrants and warlords.
They have an insane amount of sharks...not too sure about that.
I think it makes the current occupant of the White House look bad. I wonder if his administration argued strongly against such action. I think that the MSM did not cover it as a reflex action to protect their guy.
Heck, lots of people would like to fish for sharks.
Ha, I had the same thought concerning the “repossed” cars.
The luxury cars were likely taken right off of the pirated vessels, and now they have broken down for lack of maintenance, spare parts, etc.
So does Australia....
LOL. I see a new TV show on the horizon...Somali Repo.
So I guess the “Somali Hunting Cruise” I booked will be cancelled shortly. Damn, I was really looking forward to hunting Somali pirates with RPG’s!
Back in the day, one of my jobs was staffing our office in Mogadishu. Talk about a hard sell. Even the magnificent Somali coastline couldn’t be positive. In the area around Mogadishu there were some abattoirs which dumped the offal off shore. Every year a lot of Somalis got picked off by patrolling sharks. The only selling point to trick people in going there was the substantial premium pay and the two funded R&RS.
Why thank you. That’s very kind of you. I’ve been retired now for 15 years and am still reliving my “Glory Days.”
