The choice was to make it look like a protest or to admit that the US is running covert operations (at least covert to the American public) in Libya and using diplomatic cover for the operations. Plus, we armed the folks who overthrew ghaddafi and want the weapons back now. Plus, there are the Libyan weapons that went missing during all the changeover. It makes the liberals look mighty hypocritical considering their history.
