Bill Clinton: No president could have "magically" fixed economy in one term

By Leigh Ann Caldwell

Last Updated 10:12 a.m. ET (CBS News) Former President Bill Clinton offered a strong defense for President Obama's re-election Sunday morning, arguing that no president could have "fully healed" the economy in four years.

"That's why we've got to keep working at it," Mr. Clinton said on "Face the Nation."

The president's efforts, Mr. Clinton argued, have reversed the downward spiral of losing up to 800,000 jobs per month. "His jobs record is better" than the Bush administration's, he said, adding that no president could have "magically" returned the country back to full employment in just one term.

The former president, who is hosting his annual Clinton Global Initiative conference beginning Sunday, said that the Republicans "militant anti-government" approach will not benefit the economy.

There is "no evidence" that Mitt Romney's "militant anti-government approach will work," Mr. Clinton said. He added that President Obama's "balanced" economic proposal of investment, revenue increases and a spending reduction plan is "more likely to produce broad-based prosperity than Romney's."

Mr. Clinton weighed in on the debate over Romney's taxes, saying the latest release of his tax returns don't tell the entire story.

"It'd be interesting to see how the ordinary income years were treated," Mr. Clinton said. "We're not going to be able to see that."

So that's the narrative? He needs another term?

MORE FAIL.

Reagan did it in three years. That with a Democrat Congress too.

Bush did it in 4 years, too.

It was the switch of Congress to the Democrats in 2007 that torpedoed his second term.

Obama attends 2008 Financial Crisis meeting, contributed nothing, and once again proved he was the least knowledgeable and least experienced person in the room. And once again, appeared "small", like the picture in the situation room when "he killed" UBL.

"more likely to produce broad-based prosperity than Romney's"

"Broad-based, is code for MORE PUBLIC-DOLE-DEPENDENT idiots, either by handouts to minorities to keep them from rioting, payoffs to Unions ESPECIALLY in the Public Sector, where they rape taxpayers CONTINUOUSLY via their PLANTED cronies with a (D) by their name.

ALL our debt issues can be solved IMMEDIATELY by cutting ALL Welfare, Union-Subsidies via handouts to States to keep UNION public employees from getting pay cuts, benefit cuts, or better yet, MERIT-BASED NON-SENIORITY-Based pay/benefits, etc.

Until we cut the head of the snake that is Public Employees who suck the taxpayers dry and when there isn't enough Taxpayer money to buy the votes, they've been BORROWING IT, like they did for the UAW, SEIU, AFT, AFSCME, and National Teachers' Unions.

I remember well the horrible feeling I had on election day 1976 when Carter was elected, the misery he created, the true hope I felt when we elected Reagan and then, finally, the wonderful Reagan years and the decade that followed. That was the era we had real pride in our country, its leadership, and what we could accomplish. I hope those days return.

Reagan fixed a much worse situation in less time. We had much higher unemployment, more stagnant GDP, an energy crisis and sky high interest rates. It was a deep, long term situation.

Obama entered after a sharp collapse, but is should have had a rapid V-shaped recovery. Unemployment was 7.8 in the month he took office, and has never returned to that number. Things are worse than when he took the reigns. Line up month one numbers for Obama with the current numbers, and line up Reagan month one and after 3.75 years, and there is no comparison.

Obama ran that he could solve the problems, and he hasn’t any problem we had in 2008 is worse in several orders of magnitude. Debt, unemployment, size of the economy ,etc.

The lying Marxist campaigned all throughout 2008 on how bad things were, on how miserable the economy was. He promised he’d have things turned around in 3 years.

If he’s too stupid or ignorant to realize the actual state of the economy (then and now) then he’s unqualified for the position he holds and is undeserving of a 2nd term.

It’s akin to me watching movies about ocean transport and believing I can safely dock a cargo ship, then asking for a second chance when I take out a dock and dump the cargo into the harbor on my first attempt. There’s a reason why Hillary said that the presidency is not a place to get on-the-job training.

FUBO!

Obama can’t. But then he doesn’t really want to. The release of the Gitmo murderers tells me he is out to destroy the US..

I was looking for the empty chair.

At least there is proof he was in the discussions, and cannot deny he "knew nothing" as to how bad the crisis was, unless he knew all about it by way of Soros et al and looked the other way. This pic was from a foreign press article. I cannot find much about his activities with Bush in the Fall of 2008 from American sources, but maybe I did not look hard enough.

And no one but Obama could have made it worse.

Correct! And it was Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac (BOTH DEMOCRAT PROGRAMS) which caused the housing failure and led to the massive debt. Bush tried 14 times to get oversight on those two programs, but was denied by a Democrat Congress every time.
