SPOILER ALERT: EASTWOOD's 'Trouble With The Curve': Who Has Seen It?
September 12, 2012 | This Just In

Posted on 09/22/2012 10:04:20 PM PDT by This Just In

Good evening,

I hope your Saturday has been just as enjoyable (despite all of the turmoil going on in this world) as it has been for our family.

My better half and I just returned from viewing an early evening flick: Clint Eastwood's 'Trouble With The Curve'.

Despite the liberals predictions (or secret wishes) that Eastwood's appearance at the RNC may have a negative impact on his theater ticket sales, I believe Clint Eastwood has hit a home run with this latest film.

It is an endearing story between a father and his grown daughter. The chemistry between Eastwood and Amy Adams (The Fighter, Enchanted, Julie & Julia) is seamless and compelling. This film also stars John Goodman and Justin Timberlake.

I won't spoil this story by providing any more details. If you haven't seen this film, do yourself a favor and visit your local cinema. You won't regret it.

A word of caution:

This film is rated PG13. There is no nudity, but as one may expect from a film about baseball, the language is raw and offensive. It comes with the territory. I'm glad our children stayed home.

I read an interview with Clint and he thought that “Grand Torino” might be his last film. But this film is directed (or produced?) by a guy that has been on his crew for 18 years, and wanted to try directing. “He’s a good kid, so I thought maybe it would give his film a boost if I was in it.” (paraphrased).

The Eastwood films are crewed by a very close-knit bunch, practically “family”, and have been with each other for years and years.

Saw it this afternoon to a theater with about 10 empty seats left in it. Packed house. Was a great film...my friend liked it as well. People were actually clapping in the final 5 mins of it during the “meeting”...lol. A classic scene.

Saw it on Saturday. It was so good I didn’t want it to end. It’s a movie that I’ll buy in DVD and watch over and over.

And no, it does not contain poloitical proselytizing, but it does a great job of illustrating the rift between the elderly, highly competent generation and the younger, computer generation who think that sitting in front of a screen, analyzing statistics, can be as successful as actually observing the subject. At hand.

The movie is a great metaphor of life today, wrapped in a story line that kept me entertained the entire time. Every second was integral to the story, and it was extremely well done.

It is a great movie.

“.....but as one may expect from a film about baseball, the language is raw and offensive. It comes with the territory. I'm glad our children stayed home....”

Sa the movie opening night here in LaGrange,GA. Room about 80% full for the 7 pm showing, mainly an older crowd.

The story line is interesting, and you pretty much know the story before it starts. An aging baseball scout for Atlanta who has to rely on his hearing rather than his failing eye sight to scout players.

He shows up at games with an amplified hearing aid, and from the sound of the ball hitting the bat, he knows what pitch was thrown. FAr fetched? Yes, but no one questions it. We go along for the ride.

HIs daughter, whom he abandoned twice, as a child and again as a young woman, puts her law partnership opportunity on hold, to help him scout a number one draft pick in some NOrth Carolina town. She ends up being his eyes.

I noticed that Clint doesn't direct but is one of three producers. That should tell you right there where his energies are.

The movie over all is good Like a Doris Day movie, you leave the theater feeling good. Clint doesn't hit you with a morose ending. We all chuckled, (the guy behind me laughed hysterically thru out), at the vintage Clint zingers.

The script is cliched. Good guy, bad guy characters. A bit a friction here, a love story of sorts there etc. The plot right up to the end is predictable.

Foul language? Clint takes the Lord's name in vain several times, but I don't recall the f bomb or some of the other usual Hollywood filth.

The script is weak, making it, I'm sure difficult for the actors. I detected a couple times, where I'm sure Clint read his lines from a cue card. I don't recall any extended dialog from him, so I'm sure they put this movie together quickly with few takes.

Adams, on the other hand, makes the most of her part. She's quite good. Very sexy. She looks tall. Justin, too, is a likeable sort in this movie.

In summary, I give it a solid 2 1/2 stars, where you leave the theater feeling warm and fuzzy but the movie doesn't stick with you. In other words, you're not going to be thinking deeply about this film two weeks from now, as you typically do with a Clint Eastwood film, but I recommend seeing it, especially if your picnic or other outdoor event is rained out.

Been a long time Clint fan. After the empty chair bit, I’ll spend money to see anything he puts out, no matter if it’s my cup of tea or not, just to boost his ratings...

Agree. I’ll support this film for his having the courage to say what the rest of Hollywood ignores, that Obama is a dismal failure as a president and should be fired.

Great comments...totally agree with you. We saw it last night..just a nice change of pace, an escape from the world for two hours.

One thought...don't know if you've seen Money Ball..which I loved...( and the book is even better) but the Eastwood film is, in a way, an ANSWER film to Money Ball..it takes the tottally oposite viewpoint about the value of scouts and stats in baseball

I have read reviews that panned the film, not because of Eastwood’s acting, but because of poor directing by a neophyte.

My wife and I saw it last night. It was a good movie. No Citizen Kane, but definitely worth the money.

Yes, I agree with you too. Moneyball was a great movie...4 stars and made you think about the movie afterwards. I don’t want to give anyone the ending to “Trouble”, but you kinda wanted the movie to keep going. at the end, to find out what happended, you know give a short three minutes when you’re watching the credits to see what happens say the next season. The movie moved very slow in some places, but it’s all vintage clint. He has a formula. YOU have some bad guys, and some good guys, and you have some tension, and you have some in your face dialogue. It’s right out of scrennwriting 101, but for me it works. It will be a sad day when he stops making movies.

The other thing about clint, compared to like John Wayne, is with clint what you see is what you get. He’s not wearing some half @ss toupee, with some alien looking face lift...tons of make up... noooooo in fact it’s almost the opposite where he wants us to see his turkey neck...and wrinkles...

He’s an American icon. Has he won the president’s award...you know where they give it out at the LIncoln’s center? Surely he has.

You can get the earliest and most reliable box office returns at Deadline: Hollywood. They start posting early Friday afternoon PST as soon as the first matinee and evening ticket sales are reported.

Whoops, sorry, didn’t realize JediJones had already answered you.

Boxofficemojo is good, too — but they don’t have the same access Deadline: Hollywood does. Sometimes they won’t be able to get ahold of the film’s budget, or they accept the studio’s official number, which is always lowballed — and unless you know the real budget, of course, it’s impossible to gauge whether it’s making money or not.

Somehow Deadline: Hollywood is able to consistently scare someone at the studios into coughing up the kittens re true budget numbers. They’ve got sources everywhere.

Justin Timberlake is on record as saying that he really likes Eastwood and had a great time making this movie with him.
For what it’s worth.....

This is a classless post. I understand your take, and taste. To each his own, but the offhand digs (”older crowds, Doris Day, etc.) comments, as well as the details provided was a cheap-a$$ swipe.

In the future, exercise some consideration and provide a *SPOILER ALERT*. Perhaps you wanted to dissuade potential viewers by providing more than enough details concerning the film. What ever the case, let Freepers know you’re going to reveal some information about the movie which they may not wish to know.
