A Lufthansa air stewardess wearing a Dirndls poses with a neck choker inside a traditional Bavarian clothing store in Munich September 13, 2012. The crew will wear the Lufthansa collection Dirndls, created in the typical Lufthansa colours, during three international flights before and during the 2012 Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich.
More than six million revellers from around the globe are set to descend on Munich from Saturday for the world's biggest beer fest, complete with lederhosen, pretzels and plenty of the amber nectar.
With the traditional cry of "O'zapft is" ("The keg is tapped") on the stroke of midday, the mayor of Munich will kick off the 16-day extravaganza of beer-swilling and sausage-gobbling to the accompaniment of an oompah band.
As ever, the 179th Oktoberfest will also feature traditional Bavarian uniforms -- women resplendent in long dirndls, lace-up dresses with plunging necklines, and men in obligatory lederhosen or suede knee breeches.
This year's party stretches over 65 acres, with around 12,000 waiters and waitresses expected to serve more than seven million "mass" (litre-sized glasses) to punters in 35 tents, the biggest of which seats 10,000.
To soak up the suds, drinkers will consume tens of thousands of giant soft pretzels, pork, dumplings and other delicacies. Last year, party-goers worked through 118 oxen, 53 calves and thousands of chickens.

“the mayor of Munich will kick off the 16-day extravaganza of beer-swilling and sausage-gobbling to the accompaniment of an oompah band.” .....
Pic confirms it !
I miss the Oktoberfest ...was stationed in Germany many times. I miss the Hofbrau haus ...
A nice Pork Knuckle and a Mug of Beer......I couldn’t think of a finer tribute to Mohammed(curses be upon him) LOL!
oyez oyez more pix please!!!!
Once I lived in Queens NY, was my first year there. They were having an Octoberfest, but it was August, so I said to the girl manning a booth, but....it’s August?
She answered, if we had it in October it would be too cold and no one would come.
?
bears repeating!
I don't get it - I don't see any beer in that picture!
And in Norway, it’s HERRINGFEST! There’s the traditional RUNNING OF THE HERRING! Men match their courage against herring running through the streets of Oslo! The fish are dead, so there’s really not much danger. There’s THE TOSSING OF THE HERRING! Muscular young men see how far they can chuck a herring. Extra points if you hit a foreigner! And my personal favorite.....THE 24 HOURS OF HERRING. An endurance race that pits man and herring against 24 hours of tricky curves and blazing fast straightaways! The losers are eaten by cats. That includes the drivers. Enjoy some tasty herring cake and wash it down with a glass of cold, delicious herring milk!
Was that you?
woof!
Me want pretzel.
I went there in Sept 1970. Managed to sink a few steins. I speak/ understand very little German. One of the barmaids figured out that I was Yankee, and started lighting into me. She yelled that some drunken American soldiers started a brawl and did several thousand dollars of damage. Naturally, it was my fault.
