Mitt Romney is sticking by his comments captured in a video at a fundraiser earlier this year in which he told donors that President Obama's base supporters are "reliant on government," don't pay taxes and "believe they are victims." The Republican presidential nominee assembled a brief and to-the-point press conference Monday night to address the tape, which had been posted online by liberal magazine Mother Jones.
Romney, while saying his phrasing was not ideal, stood by the premise of his remarks, which reportedly came from a fundraiser in Florida.

>> Self-reliance vs govt reliance is a WINNING issue !
Absolutely.
He’d better hurry, though, before the 47% taker-to-payer ratio turns into 53%.
So, what would Ronald Reagan have done?
Appologize and say that the statement was taken out of context
- or -
Say, “Damn right, I said it, and I meant it”.
So this is what all the fuss is about. Good grief. Tempest in a tea cup.
In a generation we've gone from Ronald Reagan to Thurston Howell.
“It’s a message which I am going to carry and continue to carry, which is that the president’s approach is attractive to people who are not paying taxes because frankly my discussion about lowering taxes isn’t as attractive to them. Therefore I’m not likely to draw them into my campaign as effectively as those in the middle.”
Sounds pretty strong to me.
I would add, to be perfect, “But we want to get ALL people off welfare and get them into the productive society.”
unfortunately .... Myth is gutless ... even when he pretends to be “severely conservative” .... thanks, Rush Limbaugh and Mark Steyn (sp) ...
Romney isn’t going to get any votes from Obama’s loser’s anyway, he may as well tell it like it is.
It is hard to imagine the vacuum and bubble that would exist around a person during a campaign. I am sure the nitpicking media attack dogs and nervous advisors distort reality for any candidate who constantly has to worry about screwing up.
Romney was right in what he said and I pray he sticks with it. This is language that wins elections and draws clear lines between himself and Obama. Political correctness might win temporary favor from reporters and nods inside the beltway, but it won’t win elections.
Somebody give him a spine of steel!
That’s one of Romney’s many problems. He has to stop qualifying, stop apologizing, stop making nice. He has to start hitting hard NOW, not wait for the debates. The opposition is cutthroat. If Romney doesn’t grow a pair, he will lose in November.
He did say that, in so many words:
"My campaign is about helping people take more responsibility and becoming employed again, particularly those who don't have work," Romney said. "His whole campaign is based on getting people jobs again, putting people back to work. This is ultimately a question about direction for the country. Do you believe in a government-centered society that provides more and more benefits or do you believe instead in a free enterprise society where people are able to pursue their dreams?"
I guess barry is gilligan lol
Romney is offending the shameless sadsack Obamites who have bled the till dry and still want more.
The MSM is handing Mitt perfectly FREE campaign PR. Mitt has to play it for all it's worth.
All he has to do is reiterate ad infinitum the very words they find SO objectionable.
Mitt yanked the scab off THE Liberal running sore.... STAY RIGHT THERE and keep WORKING IT!!!!
The MSM can be counted on to broadcast it wholesale and at NO expense to Mitt's campaign!!!
I’m not sure Gilligan deserves to be compared to Obama. To be fair, it was the skipper, not Gilligan who was responsible for the shipwreck. Biden is more like Gilligan.
Carney put out the big lie that Romney doesn’t recognize that he will be president for those who didn’t vote for him He didn’t say that and didn’t imply that. He simply said that he would not fret that as much as 47% of the electorate, that they don’t pay income tax, could not be persuaded to his side, and that they were beholden to Dems for goodies in exchange for their votes. All of this is true. He didn’t say or imply that he would ignore them or not be their president. Obama clearly is not a president of all the people but that would not be true of Romney. The Romney camp should be able refute this rubbish in a more convincing manner than I.
It’s unknown to many people however, so actually the MSM telling the world that 47% don’t pay taxes can potentially be a good thing.
What Romney needs to do now is show that 47% how a better life awaits those who embrace conservatism, capitalism, and traditional values that lead to greater opportunity, freedom, and wealth.
LOL! The democrats are going nuts over his remarks on Twitter...
