They say they're not doomsdayers or survivalists, but a handful of people who met in a small room at a Mahomet church last week say they believe it's time to prepare for emergencies and disasters. And they want others to the same.
The group, known informally as the Christian Emergency Preparedness Network, wants church and civic groups to band together and prepare food, water, equipment, expertise, security and more for what they believe is an impending crisis.
It has nothing to do with the upcoming election, says David Pike, a crop scientist who lives in Champaign and is retired from the University of Illinois.
"We're not here to generate fear, but we're here to generate an awareness and then a preparedness," he told about two dozen people last Wednesday night in the upstairs meeting room at the Mahomet Community Free Church.

We are not alone!
What! No Obama posters?

Then he said, This is what Ill do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And Ill say to myself, You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.
20 But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? - Luke 12:18-20

What’s your point?
the gov't already has an EO signed and ready that would, should a national emergency situation happen, those who have stored food would be labeled 'hoarders' - thereby "criminals" an subject to arrest as they took your supplies - for the good of all...so all could starve equally.
Just remember: your local super market has enough food for the community for 1-2 days. that's it. There are no warehouses with stocked food anymore either. The truck with produce roll up to a loading dock - unload - and get reloaded with different goods that just got unloaded on the other side of the building.
ANY disruption in trucking could bring on a nationwide disaster.
I won't go into what has happened to trucking in the past 4 years, I'll just say this: Trucking companies have been whittled down to a level that the gov't could easily take over the industry - especially the refrigerated/food haulers.
Despots of the ages have a motto: "He who controls the food, controls the people."
Better trim your wicks and fill an extra oil can.
One of those real dangers is the possible end of the first amendment
wait until they start taxing your backyard garden while the locals are redistributing its produce.
“Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”
Well - my family of course!
As in all things in life, it can be a struggle to both have faith in God, yet work and struggle and be active in improving our lives. Sounds like this Christian organization would be a good place to learn how to do both better.
even before that is the danger of clueless people who DON"T see the writing on the wall - even tho now "WRIT LARGE".
Case in point - most of the posts so far on this thread - right here in FR.
If this is an example of how flippant FR's are - it's a disconcerting to think of how much of the general public is. And the unprepared, who are too busy watching Dancing with the Stars" will be the first ones knocking down your door for YOUR stores.
This group has it right - you need to network.
I know a group, intelligent people, who have been developing a small group of locals - in the country - for the past several years - long before we had a pres. O'bumbles - now have good gardens established, wells for water, wood stoves, etc, should the power go out. They'll be able to live as our great grandparents did before electricity.
Those who wait until the hammer falls are going to be in trouble. Even if it's because of the loss of your job - these supplies could be a lifesaver.
They'll get to a heckava lot of other people before they got to mine - I'm snuggled down pretty good in the woods with miles of forest behind me - I also know some foods you can grow that people don't realize are good edibles, and I know what 'wild' foods to gather. there's fishing streams, ponds, lakes all close by...I'd make it better'n most.
BTW, one of the things mentioned in the class that I hadn't thought of is using your spare canning jars to store drinking water. Prepare and seal it just like you would a jar of tomatoes or beans, and it will stay fresh for around three years. Since it is stored in glass jars, you do not have to worry about chemicals from plastic bottles contaminating your water supply.
Those of us who are shrink types, know when a person makes a point to deny he is “x”, he is usually “x”.
Horrors that they might be thought of as “survivors” - Oh, no!, or “preppers” - Oh, no!
What a long speech they made so no one would think they might be survivors or preppers.
Frankly, they ticked me off by suggesting preppers (us) are going to shoot our neighbors. Certainly, if we are attacked, we will defend ourselves just as we would do now.
What are they going to do when attacked for their goods or for no reason? They are just going to give it all to the attackers and pray for them when they leave, if they are left alive to pray when they leave?
Those two men are naive if they think because they are Christians, no one will hurt them. Balderdash.
Kartographer - you should have put “O.J” or “Jessica Simpson/Paris Hilton” etc in your title. Then you’d get their attention.
Thanks for the article. It’s important.
SAdly, FR isn’t what it was a few years ago.
Ahhh so you’re saying God doesn’t want us to care for our families.
There is plenty of biblical reference that you are wrong so next time you quote scripture you might want to look at those verses.
