Live Thread: Romney to Speak to Press Tonight About '47% Video' Comments
Monday, September 17, 2012 | Kristinn

Political reporters on Twitter are saying they are standing by for a Romney media availability on the video released today by Mother Jones of Romney at a May fundraiser speaking frankly of his thoughts on Obama's base voters and their entitlement mentality, aka the 47% who pay no federal income taxes.

The media and GOP-E have jumped ugly on Romney tonight.

Steve Holland, Reuters: Romney at press avail to respond to video says his comments weren't "elegantly stated," and "could have said it in a more effective way."

I want EVERYONE pissed off at the gov’t waste that is going on, but when you don’t pay any income taxes, you don’t care about gov’t waste because you aren’t paying for it.

Most people are pissed off.

Millions of those that once had jobs and are now collecting food stamps and a fraction of what the once made after losing their homes, saving, businesses are pissed off. Not all of these folks are professional takers.

The big problem is the millions now finding themselves out of work, or underemployed, the millions who've lost jobs, homes etc, have no stinking money to give the all consuming monster government..Raise their taxes? What a hoot.

About 30 percent of the country bought the financial farm. Government knows this.

It's one reasons why fat gov is ramping up and going after the wealthy with vengeance now.

We need to shift the discussion from who needs to pay more taxes, to radically and dramatically cutting the size and scope of government spending and control, for the benefit of all.

Ya see, it's Government that is driving all this madness.

When can we expect the lamestream media to release the video of the dinner with Barack Obama honoring an Islamic terrorist?

It was suppressed in 2008. If Romney is asked about the tape at the debate, he should turn the question around and ask the media about the tape they won’t release of Obama.

What is your response?

My response is I am sick and tired of wealthy insiders, the well connected, the communist, the special interest groups, free trade freaks, government union mobs and other frauds running this country into the ground.

Instead of asking demanding more pay government taxes why is he not demanding government be dramatically reduced in size? Why is he not demanding the elimination of needless government departments and programs which cost hundreds of billions in tax dollars? Why is he not demanding eliminating foreign aid? Why is he not demanding, eliminating unionized government? Why is he not demanding eliminating several million overpaid government bureaucrats who sit around collecting taxes and thinking up new taxes, fees and fines? Why is he not demanding our violent borders be secured?

Does his think tank focus group tell him to avoid the real issues?

How come Romney never mentions any of this?

If Romney loses, than I am DONE with the GOP

Biggirl you don't need to worry about that... If Obama wins there is a very good chance that the country will go bankrupt, the economy will collapse, martial law will be declared, and the GOP will be done.

In the last truly “free” election in Germany before WWII on November 6, 1932 the Nazis received only 33% of the vote. The Nazis formed a coalition with the Social Democratic Party which gave them a 53% majority and Hitler was named Chancellor on January 30, 1933. As Chancellor, Hitler asked German President Paul von Hindenburg to dissolve the Reichstag and call for a new parliamentary election. The date set for the elections was March 5, 1933.

On February 27, 1933 an arson fire burned the Reichstag, Germany's Parlement building to the ground. It was allegedly started by Marinus van der Lubbe, a communist and unemployed bricklayer. Many historians now believe that the fire was planned and started by the Nazis themselves. This “crisis” created a huge backlash against the communists and a huge boost in popularity for the Nazis.

Still on March 5, 1933 the Nazis were only able to muster 43.91% of the vote. Hitler alleged that Germany was on the verge of a Communist revolution and was able to form another coalition and pass the “Enabling Act” on March 30, 1933 which essentially gave him dictatorial powers. The rest is history...

In March 1933 Germany had the best educated population in all of Europe. They were largely a homogeneous, traditional and cautious society. Yet they were able to be led like lambs to slaughter down the path to complete destruction. Anyone who thinks that something similar could not happen here is a fool.

I would also add that even a very conservative estimate is that over 54 million people died during WWII. This was a pre-nuclear war time. We are facing some very real dangers in the future. Everyday I talk to people with flippant attitudes about politics. They don't understand the risks we face. After WWII the Russians sent at least 22 million people to their deaths and it is estimated that 30 to 60 million were killed by the Red Chinese during their “cultural revolution”.

BINGO!!! You are so very correct.

Romney is too clever to not have leaked this stuff to set up the Left and the media.

Aside from that, both the 47% and the Palestinian/West Bank videos tell the unvarnished truth (and Romney knows it...even if he calls it "off the cuff").

In fact, the 47% video looks like its blurriness was intentional (i.e. to look like it was taken by a spy). This was a tripod-mounted camera (it didn't move) and could have been easily focused or set on autofocus, but wasn't.

No shifting the discussion.

We need to identify all that is wrong.

Too much spending AND too many people who are in a tax bracket that pays no federal income tax.

So are those low wage employees who don’t make enough to pay fed taxes, part of what he considered the freeloading 47%?

Yes.

This is my view as well. Seems that intentional or not, Romney has found the way to get main stream media attention. Talk strong and truthful and let the utube process run with it. The democrats have to refute what Romney said and in so doing admit that what he says is factual. This will not daunt them since they lie and distort as easily as they breathe but it will help Romney with Americans who are just now seeing the full extent of the devastation Obama and his socialist administration have brought on all of us.

lol....Maybe create some tax paid think tanks eh?

Even those drooling in cups should understand what is wrong. Come on.

Some want to fix the controlling corrupt country killing government monster. Others want to continue feeding it.

“How come Romney never mentions any of this?”

Probably because he would be eaten alive by the media if he did.

The biggest problem with our government is not its size, but where the money is spent. I don’t mind spending money for defense & roads. I do mind having my money taken and given to deadbeats and to poor people who simply want my money because they want cash without work. I’m tired of paying the hospital bills of 400 lb poor people. I’m tired of paying the food bills for fat poor people. And I’m tired of buying them booze and cable TV.

If you got rid of money transfers, our government WOULD shrink - and we would get a lot more value as well.

Is he not capable of backing up legitimate demands for the reduction of the size and scope of this all controlling, reckless government which spends tax dollars like a drunken lottery winner?

The latest snippet released has Romney standing strong with Israel and dissing the 2-State proposal by the Palestinians. It should make every Jew and American who loves Israel vote enthusiastically for Romney. I think all of this is going to backfire of Obama and the Dems because what Romney said in a “private” meeting, most Americans have been saying “publicly” and they are thrilled.

If I may interject with a brief, iPhone posted post: I believe he point is this, if we bring more people into the game, then more will have a reason, heck, will have a MOTIVATION to pressure the gov to cut spending.

That’s the point, I believe. No one (at least not me) is saying its “good” to raise taxes, for the point of raising revenue. It would be “good” though because the automatic consequence is that it would FORCE the apathetic to pressure Congress to stop the waste.

Why do you think every cycle those of us paying attention always complain about nothing ever getting done about the wastefull spending? Why do you think nothing ever DOES get done?

Precisely because as was said before: to those who (in effect) pay no income taxes, there is no real world “connection” to the out of control spending. And thus, there is no motivation for those people to do anything to stop the spending. After all, they aren’t loosing any of THEIR money (even though they are but don’t realize it), so why should they?

Put another way, some “horse” must come before this “cart”. I propose that the proper horse to put in front is motivation from the masses. I propose that there can be no real change unless a majority of people in a society want such change. And, a least a significant minority (47%), soon to be a majority, quite frankly have no motivation to change the status quo.

That motivation won’t come from grand arguments for conservatism and/or liberty. It’ll come when their checkbook is hit.
