IRS: Agents will not be involved in tax audits, pursuing Americans without health insurance

The mandate in ObamaCare requiring Americans to buy health insurance is poised to go into full effect as a result of the recent Supreme Court ruling. But the IRS has no plans to get agents involved in enforcing the mandate – or at least not to the agency’s fullest extent.

A top IRS official says the agency does not plan to perform audits or penalize those who fail to buy the insurance.

President Obama’s law overhauling U.S. health care -- passed in 2010 and upheld by the high court this year -- charges most Americans a penalty if they fail to buy insurance starting in 2014.

“We will not use levies, liens or criminal prosecutions if taxpayers have unpaid amounts related to the individual-coverage provision,” Steven Miller, an IRS deputy commissioner, said Tuesday at a House Ways and Means subcommittee hearing. “There will not be revenue agents involved in this. These will not be audits.”

The statements make sense when you realize that IRS is authorized personnel to perform specific duties ~ with a specific number of personnel - who have specific training.

It is one of the more tightly controlled agencies and simply doesn't have a slush fund to dip into to do things not otherwise specified by Congress.

Not too long ago Congress had dictated that IRS devote 30% of their workhours to auditing returns claiming EITC ~ (Earned Income Tax Credit)

EITC was worth about $50 billion per year. The deficit, in contrast is 20X as large and there are individual taxpayers (corporate and personal) who turnover several times that amount every year ~ and maybe half a dozen IRS tax auditors will be assigned there.

BTW, full or part time students who claim EITC are ALSO audited by their schools.

Unless Boehner decides to put a bill forward that authorizes so many IRS auditors to specifically look at Obamakkkare related issues nothing will happen. Somehow I doubt Boehner is going to do that.

I suppose Obama is now looking for a new IRS Commissioner. Someone who is more of a team-player and follows orders without questions.

What percentage is authorized for political audits? Like the ones Clinton had done on women who reported that he raped them?

Unless we really feel like it, or you cause us some other type of a problem. Then we’ll use these laws against you...

A situation ripe for “Selective Prosecution” and bribery.
