Opponents of same-sex marriage took the neck-and-neck finishes of Republican primary challengers to Sens. Roy McDonald and Steve Saland as a sign of strength.
McDonald, R-Saratoga and Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, were among four Republicans who sided with a slew of Democrats to assure the same-sex marriage bills 33-29 passage in 2011, and conservatives have had them in their sights ever since. (Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-Buffalo, easily won a primary and Sen. Jim Alesi, R-Rochester, did not seek another term.)
While gay rights advocates stuffed McDonald and Salands coffers, grass roots groups mobilized against them, and may have succeeded in ousting one or both men.
Its what we said all along, said the Rev. Jason McGuire, who lobbies for traditional marriage. The Republicans took along and they said the dollars that would come from deep-pocketed gay activists would outspend the base. They got a lesson. This is deep-blue New York, and look what happened. It shows the poor state of the Republican Party, because its sold out to liberal interests at the sense of the base.
LGBT advocates said the result was far from resounding, and hardly resonant.
These close finishes mean theres a lot of work to be done, but it also means that there are a lot of people who support marriage equality in the Republican Party, said Libby Post, a Capital Region public relations consultant who co-founded the Empire State Pride Agenda, a gay rights group. If the other side was going to win and have it be a banner event, they had to win by 60-40. This, if it is a victory, is not the kind of victory they were looking for.
I wish that too- but the fact that libs had to spend money to elect republicans can not make them happy
Saland got a lot of money from the dems in exchange for his Judas vote. This state is so effed up.
mcdonald is trailing? what about Saland?
They sunk so much money and ground troops, we were out spent and out worked by their paid hacks. To have election this close in the 2 districts says a lot.
Voter turnout was so friking low its no wonder...

Saland leading by 42 votes
all 119 election districts in Dutchess County reporting and all 10 districts in Putnam County reporting, Saland leads 4,969 to 4,927, according to Board of Election websites in the two counties. There also were 45 write in votes
Sadly, changing a few legislators won't do anything to change the law. The best they might do is force the issue onto the ballot, but given that's it's already the law, the laws of inertia will make it harder to overturn.
Dead heat.
With 99 percent of the vote in, Marchione was ahead with 51 percent of the votes, 6,817 to 6,679, according to The Associated Press.
McDonald losing

Libs scream "choice" over abortion, when they really mean "one choice - death for the baby!"
They scream "choice" now for marriage, when they really demand traditionalists open up marriage between anyone (presumably any numbers of others) at the same time, any intra-family member marriages, any other species not far behind.
Voter turn out once again was horrific, 10% or less. The party and their minions are the only people to vote in droves.
The sexual deviants are in control not us.
Are both pro-homo Dems out? It wasn’t clear from my reading.
Yes, I believe they are. I was reading National Review online article about the NY primaries, and it seems to be the case. NOM in any case has scored a victory with NY, and also RI and NH.

yes, the tide is turning.
A close personal friend was running Neil DiCarlo’s campaign against Steve Saland. They are 42 votes behind but there are close to a thousand absentee ballots left to be counted. They won’t know the final tally till late next week. Absentee ballots often break towards the imcumbent unfortunately.
They were literally outspent 30 to 1. DiCarlo spent about $25,000 on his campaign to Saland’s more than $700,000, most of which came from homosexual groups and Bloomberg. Saland had never been challenged in a primary in his 30 years in the Senate. These primaries are being closely watched by the GOPe throughout the country.
Social conservatism is a winning proposition for those willing to promote and defend it without bowing to the PC crowd in the GOPe.
if the GOP were not so stupid and appeasing then the GOP wuld use this and announce how the left wants to redefine marriage to anything goes.
