A Possible Explanation for Obama's Connecticut Social Security Number

As I reported on Tuesday, Barack Obama has yet to provide an explanation for how he came to have a Social Security number that begins with the Connecticut prefix "042."

Filmmaker Joel Gilbert read the piece.  He has been in Hawaii doing follow-up research on his insightful new documentary, Dreams from My Real Father, and he sent me the single best explanation I have yet to see.

Getting an SSN for a child was, and still is, voluntary. It only becomes necessary when the child enters the wonderful world of taxation. In my case, I was about 10 when my parents opened a bank savings account for me. It was then that I got my SSN, with the correct prefix for the state I lived in.

Since Obama was taken to Indonesia as a child, it’s likely that he didn’t have an SSN at that point. Any suggestion that he applied for an SSN while in Indonesia is ludicrous.

So, it’s entirely likely that he was still SSN-free when he returned to Hawaii, and needed that SSN to get his first job.

I don’t believe this is entirely correct.
Today SSN’s are either issued before you can claim as dependent or possibly right at birth or shortly thereafter?
I know I didn’t have to get one until I went to work and it was issued from where applied for, not where born (this was 53)- -

I agree with you. While it would be interesting to know how the CT SSN was assigned, chasing after this is probably a waste of energy which could be better spent on investigating other facets of the Boy Wonder’s life before the election.

To me, the huge flashing neon sign is the Dystel biography claiming he was born in Kenya. Why does nobody talk about this?

I spent some time looking at SSN sequences when the death index was more available. I found that sequences were assigned randomly not in sequence based on year of issue. In other words, later years had earlier sequences. I plugged in SSNs to see when they were issued using numbers lower and higher. As long as the number had been issued to someone who had died, I got a record.

"Hawaii was and is a corrupt state," Gilbert continues. He was told by retired Honolulu police detectives that in the state bureaucracy, "anything could be purchased, including Social Security numbers." These were real numbers, likely available because the original card holder was dead. The sellers trafficked in SSNs that did not originate in Hawaii. That way, if the person using the phony SSN were ever caught, the crime would be traced back to the issuing state, not the Hawaii office.

Gilbert's theory is that the SSN problem is related to the question of Obama's birth certificate, which is required to get a SSN. Lacking a valid birth certificate, Obama was forced to buy an SSN so he could get his first job at the Baskin Robbins in 1977. In this theory, Obama was sold an SSN that was Connecticut-based so it couldn't be traced back to the Hawaii office.

The real question is who had knowledge of the Hawaiian mob - contacts with them - and the ability to pull this off while Obama was still a young man? I don't think Obama did it - but I do think he knows who got him the fake SS number. Too bad the LA Times is busy taking a class on how to kiss Obama's butt... they might be able to get an answer if they weren't getting their 'tips' from the DNC...

Gosh, if you can’t believe what the government puts on its websites, who can you believe?

FReeper xrmusn was kind enough to inform me of these facts, but also mentioned that the IRS requirement came about in the Tax Reform Act of 1986, so that wouldn’t have had an impact on Obama in his early years.

I continue to believe that Obama didn’t have an SSN until he tried to get his first job at Baskin Robbins circa 1976.
