Twitter is blowing up over this as Im writing. The best thing I can do to get you up to speed is send you to this nifty Foreign Policy precis of the standoff. Nutshell version: Japan says the islands, which it calls the Senkaku, belong to it. (In fact, the Japanese government formally purchased them from their private owners just two days ago, partly to prevent them from being bought by Japanese nationalists and developed to spite China.) China says that the islands, which it calls the Diaoyu, actually belong to it per post-WWII agreements. The U.S. is obliged by treaty to defend Japan if its attacked; on the other hand, the agreements Chinas citing to stake its own claim to the islands were authored by the U.S. Time for the Foreign-Policy President and Hillary to huddle. Quickly.
Two eternally rival nations, one a rising power and the other fading, locked in a territorial dispute that stems in part from the last time they went to war with each other. What could go wrong?

Good time for enemies to make a move while Obummer is distracted so I think your scenario is a realistic one. What to do? Help Israel if possible and other than that, hunker down and defend our shores.
True that. He’s got enough on his plate, and you know how Michelle feels about a lot on the plate.
He’ll blame Republicans.
Friends in Taiwan tell me they don’t expect our help.
South Korea can burn for all I care. We use our resources to help Israel and Georgia.
Aw naw! Will this nightmare ever end?
easy!
Obama would send out several strongly worded letters with checks enclosed for a billion each.
Obama will want to weigh all options and think about it for 48 hours and then after a round of golf make a hard and crucial decision.
To make things even more ... ahem ... interesting ... there are some higher ups in chicom politburo (or whatever they call it) who have gone mising - in fact one of these is like the heir apparent and their 10 year cycle of choosing new leaders is very close. So who knows - Interesting Times.
New International Version (NIV)
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. Tell us, they said, when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?
4 Jesus answered: Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, I am the Messiah, and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
9 Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Japan should consider a brief visit to Tibet perhaps.
Looks like she wasn't avoiding the DNC, she was attempting to prevent the US in having to defend Japan.
Ping to post #34.
North Korea attacks South Korea: Not much more we can do, but the SK military is very tough. I'm not at all sure China would allow NK to do this - they might take action themselves to defend their big trading partner SK. NK is like a wild dog China likes to use to terrify the neighbors, but they know they have little control over the dog and will put it down if they have to.
China moves on her islands or attacks Taiwan: Nothing we can do in either case. But again, barring a military coup, China's leadership isn't going to mess up the good economic thing they have going just to plant a different flag on a nearby hill. Taiwan will rejoin China within the next 25 years or so, no matter what happens, and Beijing knows it.
Cuba hits Jamaica: Obama wouldn't do anything - but any other President would smash Cuba - fast. That's too close to our borders.
Russia moves on Georgia or Belarus: With Georgia, we try to mediate and stop the fighting as fast as possible - with Belarus, we do nothing: Putin is better than Lukashenko. The US has exactly zero ability to influence affairs in Russia's sphere of influence, and we shouldn't waste resources trying.
