BOSTON (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is applauding the U.S. Commerce Department's decision to declare a national fishery disaster in New England. The move opens the door for tens of millions of dollars in relief funds for fishermen.
U.S. Sen. John Kerry said he's secured a commitment from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to include $100 million for fishermen and fishing communities in emergency assistance legislation. He said the job after Thursday's declaration is to fight for the money in a potentially reluctant Congress.

Productive workers are now forced onto welfare.
Pray for America
that figures
NOAA rigged the numbers to shut it down. Scott Brown wants to change that.
oh wait..Its JOhn Kerry ..better check this out a little more.
I would add, "and votes are being purchased!" Will it pass the House?
This only makes sense to retarded democraps.
Government destroys viable productive industry with regulations.
Causes financial ruin.
Steps in to help by taking money from other productive industries thereby destroying them.
How can anyone think this is anything other than insanity. What are they counting on to make it work? What will they do when there are no more healthy industries to destroy in order to prop up the already destroyed? It’s not possible they don’t see what will happen so it has to be intentional.
That photo looks like the breachway in Galilee. Spent many a summer there and love the area. This sucks on so many levels.
Wait... the John Kerry who was in Vietnam, or some other John Kerry?
... the HAUGHTY John Kerry, who, by the way, served in Vietnam ...
Indeed. I don't think there is any doubt the supply is dwindling. I know a lobsterman out of Westport. He is considering giving it up. So the question is, is there a case to be made for catch limits/or other regulation? (Just a question, not a position statement).
it said, fishing stocks have been declining for years,
even with catch limits.
it seems to me, in this case, the catch limit regulations are good.
...in capitalism, when i resource becomes more scarce,
some people will leave the business, and move on.
instead, now, we will PAY fishermen not to fish.
just as we pay some farmers, not to farm.
-
the solution, is to get government OUT of things!
Then why spend so much money on it? I hope Brown makes a huge stink over it.
A universal truth.
In a free market, overfishing is its own reward. It tells businesses just about how many can be sustained by the fishing industry which does not have a quickly renewable resource.
How does it tell them? Lower catches.
Lower catches result in both higher prices and fewer fishing businesses able to sustain themselves. And if they fish most of the fish gone, then most of the businesses will go out of business.
That in turn will have fewer catching the fish and give them a chance to recover.
So the bottom line is this: the free market is a better controlling force than is the government. Paying fishermen to stay in business is exactly what should not be done.
Of that, there's no doubt. Just presenting this as a case where regulation may seem like a good idea, (preserve the fishery) but ultimately ends up as another government hustle, and creation of more government dependents.
If the government will pay for my boat and for me to not fish, I would love to sign on.
Make my boat a 55’ Ketch with all electronics so I cant fish!
