Hidden heat: New Britain (CT) law allows gun owners choice (open OR conceal carry)

NEW BRITAIN — Following several heated discussions over the past few months with members of the public, the Common Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance that gives gun owners the flexibility to conceal their weapons or not.

The old ordinance required individuals to carry their legal firearms openly. New Britain — which had been the last municipality in Connecticut with such an ordinance — is now in line with the rest of the state.

While state law would supercede local ordinances, City attorney Mary Pokorski said Wednesday that the state law “does not dictate the method of carrying weapons.”

The new ordinance — which had gone through several revisions by city attorneys since June — was championed by Republican Alderman Willie Pabon repeatedly said the city was becoming like the wild, wild west with gun owners walking the streets with their weapons in full view.

Seven members of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (CCDL) attended Wednesday’s meeting to show their support for the measure, which passed 13-0.

Connecticut has had CC for a lot longer than many other states, actually. Been carrying concealed for over 20 years here myself.

They, like every other American citizen, already had that right per the constitution. These layers of state and local laws are just an attempt to obfuscate and make us believe our God given right to keep and bear arms is a mere permission, subject to the whim of politicians. Sadly, it’s working. We need to take our power back from the political parasites who would rule over us. Otherwise we’ll lose it and they will rule us. It would be nice if the millions upon millions of gun owners in this nation could make the point by picking a day and just starting to carry openly everywhere they go, without regard to what any of the parasites say about it, but we know that will never happen.

We need legal CC in every state.

Better yet, we need to make it clear at the federal level that both CC and OC are a citizen’s right.

It is preposterous that a law-abiding citizen should have to worry about this. When driving cross-county, for example, you shouldn’t have to check the laws in every state in order to take a gun with you.

Great.

I live in a backward, jerk water state which does not allow much freedom - Illinois.

Additionally, CT is a shall issue state, where if you meet the requirements the state shall issue (= must issue) you a pistol permit.

There needs to be an organized "Million Armed Citizen" march someday on a city that doesn't recognize the 2nd Amendment, like NYC, Chicago, or Mordor.

Ct is a weird state. I know I live here. Any NRA instructor in CT advises carrying concealed because Ct also has some brandishing laws that troopers like to use.

It all comes down to someone uncomfortable with an openly exposed firearm, calling the police to report it, and the lawfully carrying person having to deal (= cost of legal defense) with the consequences if the LEO response is less about enforcing the law than reinforcing an ego.

Exactly which is why my advice is to carry concealed in Ct. It’s legal and it is more hassle free.

tell us about any hoops you have to jump through to renew and what some one today would need to go through to obtain what you did 20 yrs ago, or if you let your permit expire and try to renew.
