US President Barack Obama has vowed to bring to justice those who killed the US ambassador to Libya during protests against a film that mocks Islam.
But he told reporters that the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi would not break the bonds between the US and the new Libyan government.
His election rival Mitt Romney criticised his handling of the crisis.
Ambassador J Christopher Stevens reportedly died of smoke inhalation after a crowd stormed the consulate.
Three other Americans were also killed and the consulate set ablaze, in what the White House described as a "complex" attack. Unconfirmed reports - including Arab officials - suggest the violence could have been planned in advance.
The assault on Tuesday night included the use of rocket-propelled grenades, reports say. Charred vehicles could be seen parked near the damaged buildings on Wednesday.
US officials confirmed that all remaining staff in Benghazi had been evacuated and the US diplomatic mission in Tripoli had been reduced to emergency staffing.
A US marine anti-terrorism team is being sent to Libya to bolster security after the attack, a US defence source told reporters in Washington.
Protesters against the film attacked the US embassy in Cairo on Tuesday night. 'Especially tragic'
Speaking in the Rose Garden at the White House, President Obama told reporters: "Make no mistake. Justice will be done."
He said he condemned "in the strongest possible terms the outrageous and shocking" attack.

His schedule is full now so he’ll take care of it later, Oh wait that only applies to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Benjamin Netanyahu after all is only the Prime Minister of the nation that is being attacked from all side by rag heads who want to kill all Jews.
I mean what is more important to mac daddy, going on a late night talk show or trying to help the jewish people.
I GUESS WE ALL THAT ANSWER.
Actually, this is reminiscent of 2008, Obama was behind in the overall polls but was ahead of McCain in the economy, a financial crisis played right into his hands and he never looked back. Fast forward to 2012, Obama is leading in polls regarding his “foreign policy” why not have an international crisis, and capitalize on his “strength?”. This election is over, take it to the bank.
So Stevens must’ve been the only one in the safehouse.
I have read that the 2 who were killed came in from a different location (perhaps the embassy in Tripoli?).
I'm guessing that the consulate was protected 100% by Libyan forces.
Don't know if that's standard for a consulate; an embassy, I believe, always has Marine guards.

Maybe he’ll get OJ to help him. OJ probably has the time.
Actually, if Romney plays his cards right, this incident might be a re-run of the Iranian hostage crisis that sealed Carter's fate. McCain lost because Obama outspent him 3 to 1. Obama's margin was a paltry 6%. Reagan and Carter spent the same amount, and Reagan beat a sitting president by 10%, despite RINO John Anderson taking votes (7%) from Reagan as an independent candidate.

In 2008, McCain was trying to protect the status quo in face of a crisis.
In 2012, Obama is trying to protect the status quo in face of a crisis.
Neither is a good position for the American people. We tend to blame those in charge.
He had nothing to do with the video. Reportedly the film was produced by someone that no one seems to know. Starting to look the whole thing was a setup to create an excuse to carry out a planned attack.
Wouldn't that kinda defeat the porpoise ?
I meant this:
Cheers!
Maybe nobama will do the ultimate torture: send them an IPOD filled with his speeches.
Yes!!!
If you think Hillary’s idiot chagrin on This one was nauseating, just Wait, until our FRIENDS, in Israel, Answer the Iranian Nuclear Question via the IDF.
Hillary is going to be scowling, finger pointing and Blaming Israel for upsetting the Peace Process she and her Buffoons have backed them into.
