A year after the 52 Americans were taken hostage, Carter lost the 1980 election. The hostages were released just as President Ronald Reagan, who defeated Carter, was sworn in.I remember that well, Reagan didn't have to do anything but show conviction.
The Iranians could handle a fool however they weren't prepared to confront Ronald Reagan.

The Iranians could handle a fool however they weren't prepared to confront Ronald Reagan. Precisely!

Reagan had a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiating going on to free the hostages. After the election, the Iranians knew they would have to deal with Reagan rather than Carter.

I remember that day very well.
The local paper had two headlines; RR elected and hostages released.
