PPP: Obama leads by 5 in Ohio (50-45)
PPP ^ | 09/09/2012

Posted on 09/09/2012 8:40:57 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

PPP's first post-conventions poll in Ohio finds Barack Obama with a 5 point lead over Mitt Romney, 50-45. This is the largest lead PPP has found for Obama in an Ohio poll since early May. Last month Obama led 48-45.

Both candidates have seen their images improve with Ohio voters in the wake of the conventions. Obama now breaks even in his approval rating at 48%, after being under water with 46% of voters approving and 51% disapproving of him a month ago. Romney's numbers are up from a 41/52 favorability rating a month ago as well, but he still remains unpopular. Only 44% see him favorably to 49% with a negative opinion.

Romney actually leads 46-44 with independents but Obama has the overall advantage thanks to a more unified party base. He leads 86/11 with Democrats, compared to Romney's 83/13 advantage with Republicans. Obama's 75 point lead within his own party is up from 70 points a month ago, suggesting that his party has coalesced around him a little bit more in the wake of a successful convention. By a 47/35 margin Ohio voters say they think the Democrats had a better convention than the Republicans.

Obama's leading in Ohio because he's not as weak there with some large voter blocs as he is in other states. He trails only 48-46 with men and 50-46 with whites, and actually leads 49-47 with seniors. His performance with those groups is far better than it is nationally- Romney would need much wider leads with them if he was going to take Ohio.

Despite chatter that Obama's convention speech was not up to his normal standards Ohio voters still say by a 60-31 margin that Obama gives better speeches than Romney. His position in the state may also be helped by the fact that the folks who gave the major convention speeches Tuesday night are more popular than he is: Bill Clinton has a 57/34 favorability rating and Michelle Obama's is 57/35. Romney's wife is an asset for him too- 54% of voters see Ann Romney favorably with 28% holding an unfavorable opinion. But Mrs. Obama wins out in the more popular wife category by a 49/41 margin. Out of the other Democrats who gave primetime speeches last week Julian Castro made the most positive impression and has a 28/17 favorability rating. Voters are split on Elizabeth Warren at 23/23 and Martin O'Malley doesn't seem to have attracted much attention with 86% of Ohioans saying they have no opinion about him one way or the other.

It's hard to see a path to victory for Mitt Romney without Ohio, and Obama continues to be in a strong position there with eight weeks to go.

my main glumness today has come not from polls but from Romney statement that are a dog whistle saying “hey, we are doing that McCain campaign redux!”

I hope not. We need to take Obama to the woodshed.

The good news is unlike McCain, Romney wont be outspent. In fact, he will outspend Obama by a lot:

Mitt can win without Ohio.

Florida is the indispensable state.

To get these results they had to oversample women, oversample Democrats and greatly undersample Independents.

These are the same kinds of results that were released prior to the 80, 88, and 04 elections. All of which had the D ahead by about the same numbers.

Nothing to worry about.

“Obamacare forcing Catholics (like me) to pay for abortions - the most common yard sign in Ohio right now isn’t for Romney or Obama: it says, “Protect Religious Freedom” “

This is powerful, but Romney is too squishy to drive it hard. I hope there are independent orgs driving that message. And obviously the Democrats are now all in on taxpayer funded abortions. The most extremist pro-abort in the white house in history.

What do you know about Romney’s internals?

There won’t be anything left in 16 if The Disaster is re-elected.

Conservatives could not unify around a credible candidate. There not only were no “elite morons” behind Romney’s win, nor any need for them. Who was going to beat him, Herman Cain? LoL.

Romney won fair and square. Inadequacies in the conservative ranks should not be put down as malevolent machinations by some sinister group. Though that is a common excuse.

Democrats are against retirement choice, medicare choice (gutted medicare advantage), against healthcare choice (gutted HSAs), hate school choice ... the ONLY CHOICE Democrats like is when an unborn human is murdered. They are not pro-choice, they are anti-choice and pro-abortion. You can tell they are anti-choice because the catholic church asked HHS to not force them to pay for things that violate their religious conscience - HHS under pro-abortion Obama said “NO!” Taxpayers MUST fund abortions. We all now have to pay for killing innocent life. That’s sick and insane. But then if you watched the DNC you saw a lot of insane people spew a lot of hatred, bigotry and lies to get Democrats elected. So what’s a dead baby or two, or three, or 40 million

Some of the OWS’ers are Ron Paul zombies. Didn’t Code Pink get their tickets to the RNC convention FROM SOME RON PAUL ATTENDEES? That’s what I heard!

Where Kasich went wrong with the public unions is not educating the Ohio voters. The Dems slammed their message home day after day, hour after hour with lies and the people bought it. There were very few ads explaining or telling the voters what public unions were doing.

I like Kasich but he sure has his hands full with the loud-mouthed DEMS in this state.

I once wish the Republicans would get mouthy and loud to shut the dems up once and for good rather than being so nice.

Nice doesn’t win it seems.

I’m sickened by the left lurch that Fox News has taken. One day they’ll wake up and their ratings will be in the tank like the rest of the network news.

Murdoch caved under pressure from Soros. It started when zero began demonizing them, and gosh darn it - they wanted to be liked. How stupid they were when they could clearly see their ratings were blowing the others away.

Now they are on the downward spiral - just like the others.

Oh yeah, I read somewhere that Glenn Beck was fired by Fox because of his exposing George Soros. This makes me sick and I have lost all respect for Fox News. I never watch it any more either - not just because of Beck, but because of their leftward leaning.

“Now after a democrat convention featuring abortion, gay” marriage”, and birth control, we find ourselves losing?

Well duh. We nominated a candidate who supports all three. Man. Couldn’t have seen THAT coming.

“Where was Newt?”

His job was done when Romney stopped bankrolling his campaign. Have to admit, it was well played. Newt guards Romney’s flank and prevents anyone from defeating him. Played the part to perfection.

Newt folds to Romney who folds to Obama. So far I got the first half right. I warned people back then that this was the purpose of Newt’s campaign, and sadly, I’ve been right the whole while.

Eh, Rombots have been cheering him on from day one. They’ll blame the Paul Ryan conservative wing just like they did with Palin when Romney loses big in the upcoming election. It’s never the fault of the moderate, oh no.

“We all now have to pay for killing innocent life.”

100 percent correct. The choice we have in THIS election is one of flavor. Do we prefer Purple Koolaid or Red Koolaid? Obamacare or Romneycare?

The choice has already been made for Americans that we are going to get into the business of killing unborn children. Now we’re just negotiating the supplier.

People are wondering why Romney’s campaign is so anemic? Look no further.

Yes. This should be clearer now than it ever was. Pollsters need jobs.

Check out the internals of this one: no party breakdown but a question about ELIZABETH WARREN’s favor ability in an “OH” poll?? No agenda here. Also, it shows, contrary to every other poll, that Zero is getting a higher % of Dems than Romney is of Rs?? nO other poll has showed that.
