President Barack Obama said in an interview partly broadcast Sunday that he would be "more than happy to work with the Republicans" to trim the swelling national debt — as long as they drop their opposition to raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

"You can't reduce the deficit unless you take a balanced approach that says, 'We've got to make government leaner and more efficient,'" the president told CBS's Scott Pelley. "But we've also got to ask people --like me or Gov. Romney, who have done better than anybody else over the course of the last decade, and whose taxes are just about lower than they've been in the last 50 years - to do a little bit more."

"Work with me" translated from the Oblamoblather means "I'm the President, so do it my way." It's also dog whistle rhetoric for his true believer followers -- "hate the rich."

Fifth graders can do the arithmetic to show there is no way to close the gap with higher taxes. You can confiscate all the accumulated WEALTH (not income) of those making over $1M per year and not come close to paying down the debt politicians have amassed. Trillion dollar per year deficits from here to Kingdom Come are not a responsible way to run a country. Fours years without producing a budget is not responsible governance.

So, why not offer a bill that simultaneously increases that tax while at the same time reducing the size of government? And, by reducing government I mean firing bureaucrats, eliminating entire departments such as the Department of Education and greatly reducing entitlement payments.

Somehow I imagine Obama would just find another reason to not sign it.
