CHARLOTTE, N.C. His re-election in doubt, President Barack Obama conceded only halting progress Thursday night toward solving the nations economic woes, but vowed in a Democratic National Convention finale, Our problems can be solved, our challenges can be met.
The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place, Obama said in advance excerpts of a prime-time speech to delegates and the nation.
The presidents speech was the final act of a pair of highly scripted national political conventions in as many weeks, and the opening salvo of a two-month drive toward Election Day that pits Obama against Republican rival Mitt Romney. The contest is close for the White House in a dreary season of economic struggle for millions.
With unemployment at 8.3 percent, Obama said the task of recovering from the economic disaster of 2008 is exceeded in American history only by the challenge Franklin Delano Roosevelt faced when he took office in the Great Depression in 1933.
It will require common effort, shared responsibility and the kind of bold persistent experimentation that FDR employed, Obama said.
In an appeal to independent voters who might be considering a vote for Romney, he added that those who carry on Roosevelts legacy should remember that not every problem can be remedied with another government program or dictate from Washington.
His campaign said the president would ask the country to rally around a real achievable plan that will create jobs, expand opportunity and ensure an economy built to last.
He added, The truth is it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over a decade.

For a guy whose slogan is “Forward” he sure seems to be reaching back — WAY back — a lot. Clinton, Carter, ... , ... , FDR.
He skipped Johnson and Truman.
Wonder why?
Thanks SeekAndFind.
He wants to outMarx FDR.
FDR's example inspired the ratification of the 22nd Amendment.
BO's example will inspire another Amendment -- one about verifying presidential eligibility, I hope.
IMHO each progressive we manage to hang would save this nation 15 to 20 million. Hang enough of them we could really pay down the debt.
Don't know about most voters, but I scored 1.25 lbs of chicken feet for $1.18. I GOT SOUP TOMORROW! ... and Saturday, and Sunday.

Not watching. So Bobo is finally admitting he created the Second Great Depression.
does bambi know that taxes from small business help pay for roads&bridges and that he caused a few hundred thousand small businesses to collapse under his watch?
Roosevelt had a war that got the country out of a depression. I wouldnt doubt Obama starting one.
Obama does not want us out of depression. He wants this nation in poverty. He wants this nation no better than every other third world country.
The last time I was left behind by my small business cohorts who went Galt. This time I’ll join them. How will Obama deal with creating jobs without business?
According to the movie that’s exactly what he wants. What I can’t understand is this guy has become what he hates....a one percenter.
So now, a draconian level of effort is necessary to recover, I thought the private sector was doing fine just a few months ago? How come Obama is so slow in realizing this?
Now Obama appeals to American exceptionalism.
LOL! Your post nailed it.
How many times did he say “Bush’s fault” without actually mentioning Bush’s name?
It's been said that you could take all the money from the rich people and give it to the poor people, and in a few years the poor people will be poor again, and the rich people will be rich again.
That said, the $1 million per person would be far better spent than the money that was squandered on Solyndra.
