Secret Service Investigating Purported Ransom of Mitt Romney’s Tax Returns

Someone claims to have stolen years of Mitt Romney’s tax returns from a Tennessee office of the financial firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Secret Service is investigating what appears to be a ransom scheme.

The local Democratic and Republican parties in Williamson County, Tenn., where the PricewaterhouseCoopers office is located, both received packages, each containing a thumb drive and a letter outlining a competitive-bidding ransom scheme that appears designed to pit Republicans and Democrats against each other over the release of Romney’s taxes.

The letters stated an intention to publish Romney’s tax returns on Sept. 28, unless $1 million is deposited in a Bitcoin (Internet currency) account, according to Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Peter Burr, who said both he and his Williamson County GOP counterpart received similar packages.

The Secret Service took the package from him after the local GOP contacted authorities, Burr said. The Secret Service confirmed to ABC News that it is investigating the ransom scheme.

The apparent hackers presented “two options,” Burr said. “If somebody wanted to prevent the publication of these tax records, they needed to put a million dollars into this Bitcoin account…that was to prevent them from going ahead and publishing it on September 28th. Then they went on to say that if you want to ensure that this is published before September 28th, you have the option of contributing a million dollars to this other Bitcoin account … and if you win the race … the other side will not be able to prevent the publication.”

Obama’s preferred tactic to “winning” is forced release of “scandalous” paperwork on the opposition.

Taxers are given more credibility by the DNC Media than “birthers”.

So the Dems can say that Romney was willing to pay a million to keep the info quiet?

This reeks of Obama and desperation.

BTW, Price Waterhouse calls bupkis on this.

If true then one sort of crime is commited. If false then another sort of crime is commited.

Long overdue for the Secret Service to get involved in protecting the candidates.

Yesterday the newly elected Quebec premiere may have been subject to an assassination attack ~ which I'm sure woke these guys up even if Karl Rove didn't.

Now we have Romney being blackmailed.

It's rough at the top.

As you might remember, Obama's only real competition, Jack Ryan, was defeated by an unauthorized release of records. Obama's backers found a California judge that would release the file on Ryan's child custody battle with his ex-wife. Both had agreed to release their divorce file, but not the child custody case.

There was no reason for the judge to open that file, other than politics. They had already been sealed by another judge, in the interest of the child.

Of course, Obama took the high road, saying "I don't think it's an appropriate topic for debate." But, if you truly believe he didn't know what was going on and coordinating with the attack dogs, I have a bridge in Chicago to sell you.

There’s no one to blame for falling into this trap except for Romney and his backers in the primary. It is absolutely unacceptable for a candidate to try to keep secrets which could damage his candidacy if leaked. Everyone should have demanded his returns be published before he was given the nomination. I damn sure have no interest in losing the presidency just so Mitt can selfishly try to keep his tax returns secret at the risk of our party, the White House and the country. Keeping Mitt’s tax returns isn’t that important to me and shouldn’t be that important to him or anyone else. If the information in them would damage his candidacy, then he has an obligation to let us know. And if they wouldn’t, then he has nothing to lose by releasing them.

Bottom line is I don’t trust Mitt. Only an extremely naive, ignorant individual who was unaware of his record in politics and in Massachusetts could trust him. So I don’t believe Romney’s line that the Democrats will simply “twist” what’s in his tax returns to make it sound bad. And I’m very angry that he’s setting our party up for failure in the election by waiting for these to leak out at potentially the worst possible time.

I couldn’t care less how the information gets out. If Jack Ryan was taking his wife to group sex clubs and running for office on the hopes that it didn’t leak out, he shouldn’t be considered an acceptable nominee by our party. He should have told us that in the primary and let us decide if it mattered or not. Lord knows if we had information like that on Obama or any other Democrat, we would use it, and rightfully so. If you don’t think Jack Ryan’s private habits should be known to the voters then you must have also opposed when Drudge released the Monica Lewinsky information.

I think even if Romney had released his tax returns, the dems would have found something else that he “must disclose “. These guys, even if it is a prank, should spend some time in jail, though they could be Nigerians for all we know.
