The closure of seven coal-fired electric plants in four states could be a sign of things to come as tough new emissions standards threaten to relegate America’s top energy source to the back burner.
FirstEnergy Corp., headquartered in Ohio, closed power plants on Saturday in Albright, Rivesville, and Willow Island, W.Va., along with four others in Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania as the company phases out aging facilities that cannot comply with new environmental regulations. Three others in Ohio also will be closed in 2015, company officials told FoxNews.com.
“We estimate that it will cost approximately $975 million to make our remaining seven coal-fired power plants compliant with the new [Mercury and Air Toxics Standards] rules,” FirstEnergy spokesman Mark Durbin told FoxNews.com. “Another challenge that the entire industry is facing is a very aggressive three-year timeframe to get the work done. It’s also important to note that numerous other [Environmental Protection Agency] regulations, including those for coal ash, water intake and particulates, are on the horizon.”

He did close that! And he did say that energy costs would go out of sight. Obama’s plan to bankrupt the country is right on schedule. Happily, the East Coast will be hit hardest. They richly deserve it.
That is an outdated map I believe, the coal fired plant a mile up the road from me is slated to close in 2 years, and IPL (Indianapolis) is going to close a couple up there also.
That’s three in a 30 mile radius from where I live here in S. central Indiana alone.

Nothing like having a dictator in the White House. Remember his comments, he stated that he would bankrupt the coal industry and he is doing it. Communism in the USSA!!
Government regs are running up the cost of energy and everything connected to it. But the voters feel more threatened that they will lose the entitlements and other free government stuff. They are not that concerned about $8 gallon gasoline and a $1K/Mo utility bill as long as they can get that free birth control.
All part of comprehensive immigration reform. Change the U.S. to a third world country and you remove the motivation for citizens of third world countries to come here. Why leave India or Mexico when you just as easily light a candle and stay home?

I have an old Air Force buddy who works power production. I confirmed with him that shoving a large cable up a unicorn’s a$$ is not a valid power source. Just wanted libs to know that.
Luckily (and it is pure luck) lots of Natural Gas will be coming on line as the 0bamanaughts shut down Coal Fired Electric plants.
Just in time for us to add several thousand hybrid cars to the grid.
The problem is we should be sticking it to the Arabs and using the natural gas for vehicle fuel. By forcing coal fired plans to close and forcing utilities to sop up the surplus of natural gas, Obama has assured the Arabs we’ll continue to be slaves to imported oil.
We’ll have to continue to station carrier groups in the Middle East to protect the Saudis. We didn’t do that when I was in the Navy.

One would think that hard numbers of the plant losses would have a prominent place in the lead graf. Hell, they didn’t appear in the entire article. Instead a stock photo of an unidentified grayish cloud is published.
Can’t recall how long I’ve been using my tagline, but it’s still solid gold.
This nonsense is almost over. After January, Romney can reopen some coal plants, and get us to drilling more natural gas to replace them. It can be done without any wasteful grants to bankrupt greens.
We should rejoyce because the laid off miners and coal fired electricty plants will receive unemployment checks and food stamps, which when they spend them will create “$1.73 in trade for every $1.00 given in unemployment/food stamps.”
Just quoting Princess Pelosi and what the Dems will be saying at the convention when (actually if) they are asked about it.
At this point the price of natural gas is so low, it may make business sense to close coal fired units. the problem is the last time the utilities did this in the early 90’s they forced the price of natural gas so high the combustion turbines were too expensive for some utiliites to operate.
