Mass. driver rescued after crashing car into pool

They say as of Tuesday evening, he is still in the hospital but that he's expected to be okay.

There's no question he is lucky. He backed over a fence, and his car was completely submerged in his neighbor's pool.

What's supposed to be in a backyard pool?

A kick board, maybe, but certainly not fence posts.

And definitely not a Chevy Impala.

"I heard a big bang and I decided to come out on my steps and look in my yard and there's a hole in my fence and a car in my pool," said Tom Cheffro, of Malden, Mass.

It was about 2 p.m. when an 85-year-old man lost control of his car in his own driveway, scraping the side of his house, taking down the electrical box, knocking out power, pulling down the lamp post with it, even cracking a window.

Tom Cheffro did not see any of that happen in his neighbor's yard.

He just saw his pool, knowing he had to think fast, that the car was about to sink with his neighbor inside.

Tom says he reached in, got the man's seatbelt off, then pushed the open car window down and yanked the man out as water was filling the car.

The driver's legs were stuck under the steering wheel, but somehow he got him out.

Tom's clearly a reluctant hero.

"He's kind of lucky that I was here," Cheffro said. "I feel okay. I'm happy for him. I would hope somebody would do it for me, if God forbid, you know."

The car was towed out of the pool, and as other neighbors looked on, they sang the praises of the man who clearly saved the day.

"Tom is just a great neighbor and he stayed very calm. You've got to give him a lot of credit, he saved the man's life," said neighbor Emily Murphy who called 911.

The fence is boarded up, and an electrician is fixing the driver's house.

All things considered, this could have been much worse.

"an 85-year-old man"

Yep, close enough. My guess was in the 90's before reading.

Quite a different outcome from Chappaquiddick when Teddy Kennedy left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown.

come on, its obvious, he thought he was in the voting booth and got mixed up between bambam and mittens, mistakenly pulling the 'R' instead of the 'D'...

these days, even with 20/20 vision, its an honest mistake...BWAHAHAHAHAH !!!
