Why does Social Security need 174,000 bullets?(SSA explains)

It didn't take long for the Internet to start buzzing with conspiracy theories after the Social Security Administration posted a notice that it was purchasing 174,000 hollow-point bullets.

Why is the agency that provides benefits to retirees, disabled workers, widows and children stockpiling ammunition? Whom are they going to use it on?

"It's not outlandish to suggest that the Social Security Administration is purchasing the bullets as part of preparations for civil unrest," the website Infowars.com said...

...The bullets are for Social Security's office of inspector general, which has about 295 agents who investigate Social Security fraud and other crimes, said Jonathan L. Lasher, the agency's assistant IG for external relations.

The agents carry guns and make arrests — 589 last year, Lasher said. They execute search warrants and respond to threats against Social Security offices, employees and customers.

Agents carry .357 caliber pistols, Lasher said. The bullets, which add up to about 590 per agent, are for the upcoming fiscal year. Most will be expended on the firing range.

Some bloggers have taken issue with the type of ammunition the agency is buying, questioning why agents need hollow-point bullets. Hollow-points are known for causing more tissue damage than other bullets when they hit a person because they expand when they enter the body.

The bullets, however, are standard issue for many law enforcement agencies, Lasher said, a fact confirmed by the directors of two law enforcement training centers...

"Six hundred rounds per year for training, qualification and I would assume to carry on duty is not out of line at all," said John W. Worden,

The Government explains why the SSA needs this much ammo. And they have even put up a website blog to push the propaganda...

I wonder when is the last time the SSA was involved in a hostile takedown and shoot out in which a SSA agent was shot at or needed to fire their weapon?

Look on the bright side. They bought 174,000 bullets. Unless they’re into reloading, presumably they’ll throw them at people.

The use of hollow point bullets against those suspected of SS fraud might cut down on fraud, waste, and abuse .... and I think we can all agree that the brave men and women of the SSA IG can’t be too protected against the wrath of cane-wielding senior citizens in the killing fields of the SS offices

Talking to NRA(R) engineers at work, I brought up the numbers of ammo a few weeks ago, they told me the ammount of required SSA ammo is not uncommon.

Not uncommon, but it is sort of funny that they needed to put up a website to explain themselves and their purchase! Which somehow I do think is an interesting turn of events. Americans, without the help of their congressional representatives, have elicited a response from a government agency.

Now...how many of us are going to believe them is a whole other matter?

A party whose platform is to freely kill as many babies as possible would have no problem loading me into a boxcar or putting a bullet into the back of my head.

C’mon you guys! How do you expect them to save social security? They need to cut “waste”. Shoot Grandma first, then Grandpa.

What they’ll need next is 174,000 caskets!

We know who’s draining S.S. by the checks written. These clever accountants are going to be taking out the top 1% just after raising the death tax.

I hope this is funny.

The more Government workers carrying weapons means more Government employees qualifying for retirement at 50 years of age.

My questions is why does every single govt agency need it’s own law enforcement division? The dept of education is a perfect example, and they have a friggen SWAT team!

That’s only 1 box per month. Pretty easy to do that. I go through at least that every week.

Because everyone knows when confronting a widowed oldster fraudulently collecting checks in the name of a deceased spouse one must maximize the wound channel.

You're both being terribly naive.

Think Russian mafia, Nigerian gangs, 1% Biker gangs, etc.

It's social security FRAUD, which is committed by criminals of every demographic.

I haven’t been recently, but as I recall, there was an armed guard in the SS office waiting room.

I’ve never been to a shooting range before. So, my question is, does one normally use expensive hollow points there? It seems like such a waste of expensive ammo.
