Romney: My views on abortion rights are clear
CBS ^ | August 27, 2012 | Staff/ Scott Pelley

(CBS News) In an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, Mitt Romney said his views on abortion rights are more lenient than those put forward in the Republican party platform.

"My position has been clear throughout this campaign," Romney said. "I'm in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother."

The Republican Party is gathering in Tampa, Fla., this week for its national convention, where in addition to nominating Romney for president, the party will officially adopt its national platform. Last week, the party added language to the platform calling for a constitutional amendment banning abortion, with no mention of making exceptions for victims of rape or incest, or to save the life of the mother.

President Obama in an interview Saturday said that if Romney were president, the Republican would not "stand in the way" if Congress attempted to strip women of their reproductive health rights. Democrats have recently stepped up their attacks against the GOP ticket on the issue of reproductive rights, in part because of the strong views held by Romney's running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, and in part because of the controversial remarks GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin made on rape and abortion.

Romney, however, told Pelley that the issue amounts to a distraction.

"Recognize this is the decision that will be made by the Supreme Court," he said. "The Democrats try and make this a political issue every four years, but this is a matter in the courts. It's been settled for some time in the courts."

The baby’s rights were created without her consent...The baby’s rights do not supercede hers

Yeah, you gonna have to take that up with God.

That’s right she didn’t consent to it, and so she is given the right to consent to the consequence of it.

The person at fault is the rapist, not the mother.

I don’t come here to debate pro-aborts, to try to convince willfully blind people of what this free republic’s founders called self-evidently true.

Some things are beyond debate and non-negotiable.

You’ve made your barbaric, un-American attitude quite clear, and I have made myself quite clear, so I have nothing more to say to you.

O...K...

All I can tell you is that you guys are somewhat insane on this. I’m being generous with the word somewhat, I probably should use completely...but anyway, Your position isn’t reasonable, it LACKS reason as evidenced by this...bizarre post...

The reason it will never be law is because it isn’t reasonable to force a woman to bear the child of her rapist if she doesn’t want to.

While I am certain you can find people who agree with your position, I am also quite certain you will never find enough of them to FORCE IT ON RAPE VICTIMS FOR CHRIST’S SAKE!

I mean seriously...I think I’m getting a little disgusted with this conversation.

OK, then don’t worry about it.

Worry about the things that you can change and are reasonable to change. Forcing a woman to bear the child of the man who just forcibly raped her is lunacy. If she chooses to bear it then great, I support that, but if she doesn’t, I can absolutely understand why she wouldn’t want to do that.

No, preserving the life of the innocent is NOT RAPE. People who imagine it is have no idea what rape is, nor do they understand the twin concepts of guilt and innocence. That, BTW, means you can have no understanding of right and wrong and that's pretty much the old Naughton Rule.

You might study up on it.

BTW, for your own sake you don't want people to get the idea you support individuals making up their own mind on killing others ~ Islam has that concept ~ individual members are presumed to be able to identify infidals, who they may then kill, or hypocrites, who they may also kill, or Jews, who they may kill. Modern states dominated by Islam are in an eternal battle with the mullahs who want to keep murder out of the courts and in the hands of private individuals.

No, preserving the life of the innocent is NOT RAPE.

You're right, it's not.

Forcing the victim of a rapist to bear his child certainly is though.

Stop misframing the issue.

Chris, sad to say you are a barbarian. Now that's nothing to be ashamed of provided you get educated and acquire culture that allows you to think above the level of basic bodily functions.

Alexander the Great's own father was considered a barbarian ~ then one day he conquered the Greeks ...... then they all became barbarians until they hustled Alexander and the other Macedonians out of the country to go conquer the world.

You see this mission to civilize humanity is almost eternal ~ there's always a lot of backsliding and they are always figuring out new excuses to murder each other, or torture the young, or whatever other torments they take a mind to explore.

We are lucky that some manage to rise above that in each generation, and we ratchet our way to the great city on the hill that we wish to become.

They don't kill the babies there ~

Chris, you are disgusted with the fact that your position leads invariably to nihilism and murder.

You need to revise and adjust your thoughts on the matter.

OK, great. Get the mother’s consent, and you’re good to go. You should be able to convince her that it’s the right thing to do with that line right there.

Don’t know why you are so opposed to getting her consent. It really doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

Funny you mention Reagan, because even he regretted that position after he saw how the democrats used it to murder more innocent babies. But now forty years later, Romney has absolutely no problem with the death of these children at all.

As anyone who has ever had to listen to the pro-aborts argument knows, the health of the mother was the ruse the dems used to grant every abortion imaginable because they could always come up with some “health” reason to abort — hang nails, morning sickness, headache, mental stress, etc.

It is an indefensible position for you to state this has always been the republican view on this matter and it means you know nothing about the history of this subject. I question whether you are even pro-life.

It is you who is barbaric for wanting to force women to bear the children of their rapists.

If your position is so noble, then surely you can convince her with ease that bearing the child of her rapist is the correct decision to make.

Why are you so opposed to getting her consent?

Why must you force her via law?

Hardly. I believe rape should be a capital offense.

Let me know when it becomes law, but I won’t be holding my breath.

The voters don’t care. Keep hitting about the economy/jobs/gas prices.

I agree. And I agree with Romney on this issue. And, for what it's worth, abortion is pretty far down on the list of issues I give a s#!t about.

There are others though for whom abortion is The Only Issue That Matters. And this is why the democrats can't stop talking about it. It's a great wedge issue. Why talk about the lousy economy and lack of jobs when we can hem and haw over abortion?
