At the Republican convention in Tampa this week, Ann Romney made her bid to be the First Lady of the U.S. With husband Mitt going up against President Obama in the presidential race in November, Anns job is to get out there, get on the podium and get on with the job of making hubby look like some approximation of a human being.

On both sides of the Atlantic, it is often more like The X Factor than a proper election fought on issues. It is 2012, not 1220, but wives are still called upon to declare undying love for the assorted unprincipled dopes they married, to provide the unctuous marinade that tenderises the political meatheads. To defrost and make their husbands (and occasionally wives) palatable to the electorate. Its enough to make you long for the days when leaders spouses, such as Denis Thatcher and Norma Major, scuttled for the shadows like frightened mice. Who were never heard in public and only seen when absolutely necessary.

Agreed. As nice as it was being called a “sexist” by darling Laura Bush, spouses of politicians need to sit down and shut up.
So who are you voting for on November 6th?
I found it touching that Romney's father placed a rose on his wife's bedside table every day for 64 years of marriage
Now Mitt is married 42 years to the love of his life and can't take his eyes off her when she is speaking - even my teen daughter noticed that
People like barky and moochelle (and Moir) quite possibly cannot comprehend that depth of respect and love for another human being - nor what it implies about a man's character and ability to keep his oaths and promises when he acts toward his spouse as did Bill Clinton
So do most politicians
Mitt Romney personally helped multiple people in need during his life.
There are no such stories about Obama and we already know how much help he has provided to his half-brother George.
Jan Moir, did you even have to TRY to be so condescendingly nasty?
(More proof that we desperately need authentic journalists in today’s world.)
HA-HA, Ann said she was worried about rising gas and food prices in her Olivia Walton speech.
That one was pretty funny.
But it was Christie claiming that Republicans are bravely telling seniors the truth on Medicare that was the gag of the night.
Frankly, who cares what this Brit twit has to say? Why post this laughable crap?
I don’t much care for the spouse speech either but writing such a jaded article about them makes Jan look like a bitter old cynic whose husband probably would not say nice things about her.
Why is 47 years of marriage tripping their gag reflex?
The article is mostly a wide ranging hatchet job, but this is certainly something that would be nice to see again:
“Its enough to make you long for the days when leaders spouses, such as Denis Thatcher and Norma Major, scuttled for the shadows like frightened mice. Who were never heard in public and only seen when absolutely necessary.”
Laura Bush was very refreshing on this, as was Nancy Reagan.
“I guarantee next week the wookie will be up there trying to tenderize barky, too ... or would that be to toughen barky?”
Toughen. They have a beautiful, mutually supporting relationship. He shaves her back, and she glues the hair to his chest. Like Yin and Yang, and AC-DC, there is a kind of balance there.
I don’t like the man’s political history or record, but this is beyond the pale of insults. The man obviously stuck by her through MS and breast cancer to the point she still wants to be with him. Dressage may seem very elitist in the U.S., but my daughter grew up in New Zealand and virtually every town had a pony club and dressage was like U.S. Little League Baseball. Insult the woman for something real, like wearing white after Labor day or wearing stripes and plaids together. This is just petty and hateful.
“Laura Bush was very refreshing on this”
Not so much.

Was there ever a First Lady who was more conservative than her husband and was a Republican (it would be easy to be more conservative than a liberal)?

the Brits are still sulking over New England, and 1776.
“Was there ever a First Lady who was more conservative than her husband and was a Republican (it would be easy to be more conservative than a liberal)?”
Nice distinction. Hadn’t thought of it that way, but it could well be that Ladybird Johnson and Rosalynn Carter kept their spouses from being quite as left as they might have been. Hard to think of anyone having much influence over LBJ though.
“Dressage may seem very elitist in the U.S., but my daughter grew up in New Zealand and virtually every town had a pony club and dressage was like U.S. Little League Baseball.”
True also in the rural and outer suburbs. Everyone does it and it is pretty cool to ride a horse through dressage exercises. I liked cross country better but dressage is cool too.
I guess if you spend your life playing video games, watching reality shows and you regard the grand opening of a new restaurant as an adventure, dressage might seem very elitest, but then again you probably are an “urban pansy”.
Horses are a blast.
