Pentagon threatens ex-Navy SEAL over book on bin Laden raid
NBC ^ | 8/30/12 | Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube

The former Navy SEAL who just wrote a book about the Osama bin Laden raid is in violation of the non-disclosure agreements he signed, the Department of Defense General Counsel said Thursday.

General Counsel Jeh Johnson wrote in a letter to "MarkOwen,"the author’s pen name, that by selling his book he aggravates the violation.

"We've got to get serious about leaks ofclassifiedinformation,"a senior Defense official told NBC News. "As unpalatable as it may seem to go after this Navy SEAL, if we do nothing there is no deterrence, nothing to prevent others from doing the same."

and yet the CIA (WH apointees at) gave Hollyweird a stack of classified documents to make an obama-is-a-tough guy propaganda movie for release just before the election

who makes money from that?

Isn’t the Presidiential oath a nondisclosure agreement to protect our national security?

Sorry, I give this guy no break for his politics. If he published details that were secret and subject to a non-disclosure then he is a traitor and should be prosecuted as such. If he did not, then the Pentagon should stay out of it.

I have a feeling that the administration is concerned more about what the American people will find out by reading the book rather than what any enemies may find.

So if the guy is writing the book for money alone then i may agree but if he is writing it to get the truth to the American people then i say go,go,go,

This country does not belong to the s.o.b.s in washington who are in my opinion nothing but whores, it belongs to the American people.

It is a done deal so what is wrong with us knowing the truth about it?

any details that match those in the CIA documents obama’s handlers released to obama’s Leni Reifenstahl’s buddies in Hollywood to make “O Dark Early” are not prosecutable, of course

nor those leaked by Tom Donilon et al to any NYT or foreign news organizatuon

prosceution cna focus only those book details that are altered, and only to the extent they can be proven to cause graver damage to the security of the United States than the potus and loose-lips biden who outed SEAL Team 6 within hours of the raid and whoever later compromised half the team, leadingot their deaths in a helo ambush

they have already sued and won against a CIA person . They get the profits of the book and all money made including movies off of it. He tried to get authorization on it and asked them to redact anything they didn’t like..they sent him back a blank book

They just need to keep it off the shelves until after election day and then it won’t matter.

Me neither. One my cronies is a retired SF O-6. He quoted me chapter and verse on this guy's responsibilities and made it clear in no uncertain terms that this guy f’ed up and the DOD ain't going to take it lightly.

If? It was a highly classified mission; this guy belongs in the brig.

Let’s see if Obamugabe prosecutes Kathyrn Bigelow for her movie that will no doubt make Obamugabe out to be some sort of god for continuing the policy of George W Bush.

That won’t happen, because Obamugabe will just deem anything revealed to her as “declassified” and thus let his team off the hook for anything they say.

Ok. But it's a 2 way street. Not legally maybe, but in practice it is. The administration used this operation and these men to make political points. They don't risk their lives to win elections.

Killing bin Laden was great, and I think the administration deserved a victory lap. If I were president I would have strapped his corpse to the hood of my truck and driven up and down every street in town...

Spot on.

Surprising that FReepers haven’t done their usual due diligence research on ol’ Jeh Johnson who actively campaigned for Barry and was rewarded with his current position as Political Officer, reprising a similar role in the Clinton admin.

Real question to ask is. What has been Johnson’s role in expediting release of classified info to Barry’s media lap dogs?

What role has Jeh played in pursuing prosections of our warriors on specious or inconsequential charges? Any memos published to JAGs setting general tone about such charges, while maintaining a white collar lawyers distance?

Folk have to start doing oppo and intel research on their own again.

The presidents powers do not include suspension of our First Amendment rights. What government secrets were divulged? The action was on National TV.

I couldn't agree more. But that's not what they did. In fact they went out of their way NOT to do that and then went out of their way to lie about how the deal went down. Hell, Biden even popped off about who did the op when that was technically classified. I'll bet you a steak dinner he didn't get a letter from the DOD. Then Bozo showed up at HQ and wanted to meet the trigger men.

This guy should not have disclosed details. But I am really starting to wonder if these men feel like they have any advocates up the chain of command at all. Are they starting to think they they are just risking their lives for the benefit of politicians?

The ones I blame most right now are the generals up the chain. This thing should never have gotten to this point. The second Biden disclosed classified information and the lies started, they should have read senior officials in the administration, including the president, the riot act and told them shut the hell up. And threaten to resign if they didn't. But they won't of course because they are lap dogs, which is the root of the problem IMO.

Not a question of presidential power. Protecting classified information is not a First Amendment issue, it is a national security issue. The sailor in question has signed agreement acknowledging that he would not disclose classified information. Depending on the nature of the information, some of it may not be divulged long after a person has left the employ of the government (or ever, for that matter).

Yes, this incident is over but if his book gives operational details that may get some of our guys killed in future operations then I don't care what his politics is - he is a traitor and needs to be treated as such.

The administration doesn’t want the American people to know about its lies to the people.

I see where you are coming from, but why did,nt they just capture him instead of assassinate him? were they afraid he would talk too much?

That is one book i will read if i see it on the stand.
