Sorry I had my mind on Clint Eastwood. Actually he is only 82, but Marc Rubio was the one that made the mistake. I guess it was a long nite. Even an Old Lady can mix things up without enough sleep!

Biology For Dummies

We should bear in mind that an acute-stress-induced surge of LH is shortly preceded by an elevation of serum progesterone from the adrenal glands. This fact suggests that such an elevation of serum progesterone may advance the secretory transformation of the endometrium resulting in embryo-endometrium asynchrony and consequently reduced chances of implantation and pregnancy if ovulation and fertilization took place.

“The most common causes of failure to ovulate are:
Stress, weight fluctuations, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (P.C.O.S.). Other causes may include disorders of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland and raised prolactin levels.”

http://cairoivf.com/treatments-ovulation_induction.html

“In conclusion, acute stress on the day of proestrus can affect female reproductive physiology. Moreover, the angiotensinergic system, through AT(1) receptors, participates in the effects of acute stress in the morning of proestrus.”

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17573075

Animal breeding also is affected by stress. Zoos, in particular, have difficulty getting some animals to reproduce in captivity, Bentley said.

Based on animal experiments, researchers attribute much of this stress effect on sexual function to an increase in glucocorticoids - stress hormones - produced by the adrenal gland. In the brain, these glucocorticoids suppress the main reproductive hormone, GnRH, which in turn causes a shut-down of the release of the gonadotropins luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone by the pituitary, and then a suppression of testosterone, estradiol and sexual behavior.

In 2000, however, a new reproductive hormone was discovered in birds and dubbed gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) because it had the opposite effect of GnRH - it inhibited release of gonadotropins, thereby suppressing reproduction.

“It’s very adaptive to not be wasting resources on reproduction during times of acute stress, to just shut down reproduction for 24 hours or so until the stress is gone,” said co-author Daniela Kaufer, a UC Berkeley assistant professor of integrative biology who looks at how stress affects molecular processes in the brain. “These functions go back in evolution a long way.”
. . ..

Kirby showed that acutely stressed rats showed increased RFRP levels for several hours, but that levels returned to normal by the next day. Chronically stressed rats, however, were left with longer-term elevations of RFRP levels in the dorsomedial hypothalamus area of the brain, and suppression of activity in the reproductive axis - the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal hormone cascade - that is associated with lowered sexual activity.

Cool. I’m sure some libs can show some studies saying the opposite, which is the whole point. He gave libs a huge huge talking point. Hence why people got upset about it. Not the stupid legitimate gaffe.

You're the one pushing the talking point.

Pregnancy is less likely after rape, leading ob/gyn says

Akin not far off base in rape comment Jane M. Orient, M.D.

There are no studies that claim that stress does not affect the reproductive process. None.

By your logic he must go, for there is no room for error

I never really went that far. Are you saying that such an option of letting Rubio go would be understandable and justified for making such an error?

I certainly did not read where anybody is calling for Rubio to step down over this. (perhaps because of his stance of illegal aliens) but not this.

Show some examples? Or are you just trolling to start a circular firing squad on this issue in FreeRepublic?

The posters who spent most of the last week hammering Akin for a lesser offense sure are quiet this morning

I am just responding to the poster that posted the above jewel comparing a belief to a gaffe. And of course it's less likely. Are you serious? There are a lot of factors that go into getting pregnant, hence why his statement was stupid.

And of course it's less likely.

That is all Akin said. Only those with an agenda or those with no spine see it otherwise. But perhaps you're a committed GOP-E fan. If so, here's your guy...

Rove makes Akin murder joke

The rest of us aren't going to back down over a clumsily spoken statement when the truth is on our side. Should we cave in on Glowbull Warming too? Oh, that's right, Romney already believes in that. No need for us to cave on that.

All it had to be was a simple answer. “I support life no matter the situation”. But, your boy tried to justify it with debated science, when that’s not even a good answer even if it was true.

All it had to be was a simple answer.

But it wasn't. Something politicians do all the time.

At this late date I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this cowardice. The Dems squeal and the Pubbies fall flat on their faces and beg for mercy. Same ole same ole GOP.

You can trot out all the links you want. The Dems (not I, because I don’t have an opinion either way. Life is life and should not be aborted) will provide you with a counter. Hence the anger towards Akin. Why make it an issue? He did.

Are you serious? It's obvious that Rubio simply accidentally switched the words. There's an ENORMOUS difference between that and sincerely stating ones belief that a woman's body has defenses which allow them to shut down their reproduction in the event of legitimate rape... which would come as a surprise to all those women in Eastern Europe who became pregnant after they were raped by Russian soldiers. But according to Akin, since they all became pregnant that wasn't legitimate rape, and they must've wanted it to happen, right?

If you really can't see the difference between those two things then you're a lost cause.

"Affect" is not the same as "shut it down."

The difference between Akin/Rubio is that the femi-nazis went nuts over Akin, whereas the Left loves despotic government and was therefore quiet over Rubio’s gaffe.

The lapdog media followed the femi-nazis on Akin and on their heels was the pathetic GOPe, NRC, NRSC which included our self described “severe conservative” presidential nominee. PC rules the GOP, not me.

You all joined in the gang rape of a good man.

Last week, no one knew what “Legitimate Rape” was, but it sure sounded awful didn’t it?

Uh, spare me the history lesson and send a campaign donation to the conservative in the MO Senatorial race.
