WASHINGTON, DC, August 29, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A poll of likely Missouri general election voters released this morning shows that, far from being out of the race, embattled Senate candidate Todd Akin has regained his lead over Senator Claire McCaskill by a 45% to 42% margin, with 13% undecided.
The survey conducted by Wenzel Strategies commissioned by Family Research Council Action also shows Akin leading by 10 points among independent voters.
“Despite the firestorm of news in the Senate race over the past few weeks, most voters have already made up their mind in the race, the survey shows,” said Wenzel Strategies pollster Fritz Wenzel. “The fact that 80% said they were firm in their choice certainly indicates that this is a race that will be decided more by ideology and turnout efforts by the campaigns and less by breaking news that flashes across the news pages and cable news channels.”
Wenzel also observed that “McCaskill holds a 58% lead over Akin among very liberal voters, but that pales compared to Akin’s 81% to 5% lead among very conservative voters in Missouri.”
Family Research Council Action PAC Chairman Tony Perkins was unequivocal in his support for Akin. “Throughout his career, Todd Akin has consistently fought for legislation that honors marriage, human life, religious freedom, and national security,” he said.
“He also has a long record of opposing the commodification of women - in stark contrast to his opponent and liberal detractors, who promote groups like Planned Parenthood while ignoring how abortion harms them.”
Perkins noted that McCaskill has supported taxpayer funding for abortion on demand. “She came to the Senate claiming to govern from the center but has instead been a steadfast supporter of President Obama and his liberal policies,” he said.
The Family Research Council telephone poll was conducted by Wenzel Strategies from Aug. 27 to Aug. 28, testing 829 voters for a margin of error of plus or minus 3.38 percent. The sample was 32.7 percent Democrats, 34.1 percent Republicans and 33.2 percent independents.

And for all you non-Missourians: We who live in Missouri tried to tell you when the whole thing happened with Akin. But were were shouted down and villified. We tried to tell you that the dislike of McCaskill + Akins dyed in the wool Conservativism would carry the day. People are really fed up.
OH! And not to mention, we Missourians really HATE it when outsiders try to tell us to do something. The GOP is toast in MO.
The first is still a possibility. The second ain't gonna happen.
What a BS post. Sure a lot of Freepers wanted Akin to resign because it looked like he'd blown the race by saying something stupid. I was one of them (and for the record, Akin did say something stupid that was used by the media as a cudgel against him and other candidates). But to suggest that Freepers will be "depressed" over this news just shows how combative you are with fellow Freepers.
I thought Akin was a fool who had cost us a senate seat that was in the bag. If he pulls this out, I will be delighted. I will probably be sending him money.
For me, it was all about the seat. I don't know what your priorities are.
I can provide several links to medical studies and research that has been conducted that show that there are indeed contributing factors to women having spontaneous abortions (miscarriages). It isn't so much a matter of "rejection" as it is an instance of incompatible conditions for growth in early embryonic development.
Would seeing them possibly cause you to change your mind or are you already set in your determination?

I saw a lot of supposed conservatives shooting Akin in the back for one statement he made, while having one of the best voting records in Congress. Much better even than Paul Ryan. Yet these same people are willing to overlook a candidate who implemented socialistic state mandated health care and who believes in global warming taxes on private industry to pay to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. I am so happy that Todd Akin has stuck it out and did not buckle to the RINO establishment that wanted to replace him with some squishy John Boehner ass kisser. Go Todd Akin!

Here’s my take on the pattern of conservatives’ reaction to the unfolding events.
1. Surprise over what Akin said, whether they agreed or not.
2. Confusion as to whether it was true.
3. Concern that what he said could give the seat to the Democrats.
4. Consideration that if this was enough to torpedo his election, maybe we need to put up an electable candidate before the deadline.
5. Further reflection on the ramifications of all of this. A last minute scramble for a new candidate might be worse than backing Akin.
6. Anger at the disloyalty of the RNC.
7. Closer scrutiny of Akin in totality, not just the single remark that got so much attention in the media.
8. Decision to vote for Akin, either because they fully support his views, because they trust him to be truthful and not a slick machine politician, and/or because they do not want McCaskill to win.
I think most of us are susceptible to a shakeup of our opinions for a variety of reasons. This is why the “October surprise” is so effective. Hopefully, events like this will help us to learn to think fast and react properly.

I don’t give a rats butt what you think about my post. I stand by every word. You guys were a bunch of immature brats during the whole thing. You are depressed that he is going to win. You want to pound your chest and say that “see he should have dropped out. We don’t want a patriotic conservative with a great voting record in the Senate”. You folks were completely wrong about the entire episode.

This event has shown that there are far too many who are simply incapable of doing that.
Expecting such a rapid mental transformation in such a short time frame is asking for the impossible and is also, IMO, wishful thinking, as has been evidenced if you've been following the issue for the last week.
Don't worry. The Akin-haters on this board will dream up a way to spin this news. They'll probably be posting in this very thread.
